We already have a Namora and a Punisher. We need never-before characters. Plus there’s plenty to tie-in a Punisher to upcoming Daredevil season or the Punisher Special slated for later this year…
Having seen preliminary results I think what the experiment shows is that the average age of forum users is higher than the demographic that is being targeted with most of the offerings. We want characters that predate this game! Preferably by at least 20 years.
The fact is that they have run through like 90% or more of the most recognizable characters. So we are at the point where you are adding people that are much less well known.
Now your choices as a dev/licensee who needs approval of every character you choose to add are to add old characters that appeal to player’s already consumed and nostalgic media, or find new characters that they can make familiar to players via exposure and repetition.
It’s also possible Marvel has a preferred list of characters they want to increase exposure of, AND that the devs, who are sort of likely to be younger than most players, are more into more recently created characters than say, Paste Pot Pete. But who knows exactly what the various factors are that go into this.
I do think the game in general (and Marvel) have a desire to increase exposure of more diverse characters which makes sense because the audience of young new readers and players etc are increasingly diverse as a population. So that often means adding characters that are new, since a huge % of the old classic characters are white dudes.
