Damping sphere - has it always been cumulative? [Fix in 3.1]

Was playing around with some cards that I have not used all that much.

I came across Damping Sphere. Is it supposed to be cumulative?

I had a total of 3 DS out on the board and the mana bonuses were each reduced with 6 for both myself and my opponent. I actually did not expect the card to effect me, but that can teach you to read the card instead of assuming anything I MTGPQ. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The cumulative thing is puzzling. Because I can’t recollect any other support that is cumulative without it being explicitly written on the card (and then only Powerstone shard comes to mind)

It shouldn’t be. Sounds like the same issue that Gilded Lotus is having.

Then this seems to be a bug.
@bken1234 - can you move this thread to the bug section and change the title to DS is cumulative or similar?

I’ve had a similar occurrence. But I was not able to repeat it. Could have been a very specific card combo I played, but I missed it and was never able to reproduce/exploit it… :squinting_face_with_tongue:

I’ve never seen this one not reinforce, but I don’t know that I’ve ever seen it cast more than once either. It certainly doesn’t say it will not reinforce.

It did reinforce on each subsequent casting, but the strange thing is the cumulative behaviour.

Oh so it’s acting like “when this support enters the battlefield” instead of “while this support is on the battlefield”. That’s crazy lol

Current personal record -

-12 per color.

Jodah said “I don’t see the problem!”

That is amazing. Possibly considered cheating, but awesome nonetheless.

Mmm, but then again, this might make Damping Sphere actually playable

Let that discussion die, the keyword might trigger tinykittys trying to compare apples and pears over and over again.

It looked funny, like really funny. The set up is quite complicated, it could easily backfire since you need to rush through at least one deck to make this a l proper lockdown. And then it’s crucial to keep jodah alive

Mana denial is one of the existing strategies in mtg

Hi everyone, I’ll reach out to the team to confirm if this is the intended behavior.

Like always I used Teferi for this battle. Kinjali, lifelink & Tef’s 3rd always did the trick; but not this time. It wasn’t enough for Greg to play several Damping Spheres (which for some reason stack so manabonusses were around -5) but his ability to exile creatures also seemed to exile my 3rd ability support.

Obviously I lost this match because of this new ‘feature’; it was only my support that was exiled, not the Sphere. Of course.

I couldn’t find any other reason in the log for my support being destroyed directly the turn after casting, twice. Anyone else had this happen as well?

It’s how it always was. The exile takes away shields from your supports.. The dampening sphere thingy was actually just bad luck; It got me today, too, but just prevented me from casting the third saga.

The problem is likely that the additional effects are not really well announced in the event.

All the previous times we played AWR it never exiled the supports I played (saga and 3rd ability). It didn’t take away a shield either, it was destroyed right away. It shouldn’t do anything to my supports (as it never did), his ability mentions creatures only.

Click on the event info (the small i in the top right corner of the event), then at the bottom you see the terefis regret in bold letters. Click on it, then you see what the support does that’s in play on the final node. I can assure you that this is the same description and effect as it was before.

This is what I meant with “not well announced”

What has changed is that dampening sphere didn’t always stack I think.

in 2.9 , support’s shield was reduced when we exiled a card.
i figured u always play all cards. So, no exile any card.

Teferi regret as below.

@Tombstone any update here? Doesn’t seem to have been changed with the new update, does that mean it’s intended behavior? It’s been causing some pain in the AWR 2.3 node

Then I don’t know what happened all the other times because the moment I’d have the ultimate it was a cakewalk.

Thank you both for pointing out it was in the supports description, I only remembered it as losing 3 life :# Gonna put Demystify in it now though, stacking Sphere is brutal.
