Dennick Pious Apprentice gives no choice about whether to hold him back [Investigating]

I have enough mana to cast Dennick Pious Apprentice, but the game gives me no choice about whether to hold him back: I must replace an existing creature. Nothing on the card text indicates this card should act in this way.
