I played against a championed SL, and he was pretty disruptive! Might have to do with not targeting him first because of his terrible forum reputation, but I can envision a few useful lineups with him.
I have 3 unchampioned 4*s with 13 covers: Fury, SL, and XFDP. I already have two Fury covers in my queue, so he’s the immediate ISO priority. After that, I’m probably going to be getting multiple Star-Lord covers (both Gamora and R&G are 181) ahead of XFDPs.
Being able to re-spec him would be good when his DDQ comes around again.
I know xfdp is very useful. if I had the iso, SL would definitely be on my list. right behind kp, x23, nova, and carnage. somewhere in the fury/antman/ghost rider group.
edit: after further thought, behind the fury/antman/GR group. maybe in the falcap area
Star Lord suffers from the forum’s “doesn’t have an ability that just instantly kills everything, so he sucks” syndrome. Both of his countdowns do respectable damage, and purple does some AOE at 5 covers. Admittedly his yellow sucks and is only worth using if you don’t have another yellow user on your team, so it defaults to 3 covers.
He’s not top notch, but he’s not nearly as bad as he’s made out to be.
you might be selling his yellow short. at 4 covers it reduces r/blue/y/g powers by 2 instead of 1. with any cheap abilities, this gets pretty strong. see daken, nova, cyke, torch, carnage (yikes!), GR… that’s enough for me to run him at 4 yellow (and I’m considering 5, but just haven’t had the 5th come in yet to make that decision - adds purple for fist/rulk/kk/jean/loki/etc). I don’t use him a ton and he’ll remain at 145 for me for a while, but when essential, I like playing him.
I will be championing him soon myself, especially because I’ll be winning three of his covers through daily logins, and I’ve already championed most of the very good 4*s, so I’m ready to move onto the next tier.
When boosted I use him in pvp plenty, now that IM40’s yellow has revamped use him a bit less, but with Iceman doing stun punch stun, for 12 blue ap depending on who you punch and if iceman is boosted you can neutilize the opponents team with his yellow out and 12 blue ap. I think he’s very underrated. I have him close to 200, I have a couple others on my max out and champ first list, like x23,xfdp,KP,PX, cyke when I get the couple covers I’m missing for him but than I’d consider Starlord as soon as any other for sure.
This all day long. This forum is incredibly helpful but I learned a long time ago not to judge a character until I’ve actually had a chance to use them myself. Case in point 3* Bullseye is one of the funnest clutch characters in the game but you wouldn’t know it by casually browsing the forum.
More like “all his abilities depend on randomly placed countdown tiles so he sucks”. Yeah, he’s not terrible but he’s very unreliable, especially in PvP. If you manage to keep his CDs alive, he’s pretty good, or they could just get destroyed by errant match-4 or cascades, and you end up wasting a lot of AP.
Star-lord was one of the first fourstars I championed. Haven’t regretted it. He’s dang fun to play. In the Gauntlet I have been running Star-lord, Nova and Iceman for some of the trickier nodes. Works like a charm…
The lack of covers and ISO make me sad, because I would champ him too. He was fun to play alongside Gamora and CStorm when he was required in The Hunt a little while back.
There are a few characters that are lower tier that I enjoy playing quite a bit and have a lot of success playing. Star-Lord is one of those for sure. I really enjoy Ant-Man too. Some day…
His pink is targeted placement and can remove ANY tile in the game making it very useful.
Red is randomly placed and a shame that it’s turns increase at 5 covers… Though switch star Lord and falcap takes 3 characters with little value alone and makes them a pretty good team
This is the way I’ve been handling my 4* championing as well. It seems silly to have champion 3s generating 4 covers and then wasting those covers because the 4* isn’t championed, so I build that into who I’m going to focus on next.
Star Lord isn’t considered great for PVP because of his countdown tiles, but I’m certain you will make a lot of use of him in PVE.
In the post-champion/3* nerf world, I find that any championed 4* character (with the exception of TA Hulk) is loads better than a 3*. My championed 4* Thor and Nick Fury aren’t scary in PVP to 4* players, but they’re very effective against 3* teams, meaning I’m still able to hit 1000 way, way easier than when I only had maxed 3*s.
I suppose that’s the issue though.
When ISO is at such a premium, why spend it on an okay character when you could be levelling up Rulk, Hulkbuster, XFDP, Teen Jean, Iceman or Cyclops? And even of those guys aren’t at 13 covers yet, you’re more advised to hold onto the ISO to max them out when you do get enough covers.
If ISO was more freely available, like it was when I was still in 3* land (relatively speaking, anyway), I’d level up my Star Lord much quicker. But needing to save up 200,000+ ISO for a single character…I need to make sure I dump it on the right one.
Oh, I’ve played with XFDP a fair bit, esp. when he was buffed, and he’s certainly on the shortlist of maxing priorities. I’m basing my championing decisions, though, on what covers I have in queue, and I expect I’ll have extra SL covers sooner than I’ll get XFDP. I also focus mainly on PVE, so the gap between the two of them isn’t quite so large as it would be in PVP.
