Joint 5th in PvP

I’ve just lost out on a Mythic by scoring the same amount of points as the player who came in 5th place in PvP, and I am not happy about it.

I was in 5th, but then when I checked later I was in 8th, getting knocked down the board by players scoring the same as I did. Then I heard about some kind of bug on the leaderboard which changes your rank if you look at it (because OF COURSE it does), so I didn’t check my rank again until the end of the round, and my final rank was listed as 7th. How can I possibly move up in rank without playing another game?

Getting a mythic instead of a rare really matters to me because OGW is such a small set and I already have all the rares.

A mythic is worth, what, about 400 crystals more than a rare? (As it seems you get about 1 mythic per big box of boosters to 1 rare per fat pack). So your software is just shuffling up eveyone who gets the same number of points and randomly awarding some of them an extra 400 crystals worth of card. That’s a lot!

It’s possible, of course, that at the last second someone scored enough points to knock me and my compatriots down to joint 6th, so perhaps I have not been cheated out of prizes. But there’s no way of knowing that, is there? Because if I go and look at my score, I’ll get plopped into the leaderboard randomizer again and have my rank changed.

Might I suggest that if there is a tie which carries over the boundary of a bracket, then maybe everyone gets the prize from the higher bracket, rather than randomly deciding who does? In fact, is my memory failing me, or was QuickBattle not changed to exactly that system?

I have not claimed my ‘7th place’ prize yet, so as to make it easier for customer support to sort out. Thanks!

And I didn’t even lose games to lock-ups this round. I can only imagine how annoyed those people must be…

It’s probably that some other player came along and scored higher than you. About two hours before the event ended I was in 2nd place (69/70) after another player with the same score. However when I claimed my reward it said I was first.

So I assume that he and I were both “1st place”, and anyone scoring 68/70 would be “3rd place”, etc.

Hopefully that’s how it works, otherwise it’s very unfair.

I didn’t have a crash the entire event this time. Whenever I faced a red planeswalker (only crashes I had in the past events), I’d close the app and re-open it prior to playing the match. I played every other match consecutively without closing the app.

EDIT: What was your final score? I have a screenshot with 1:30 left in the event with four people at 69 points and you at 67, tied for 5th.

I was also tied for 5th at 67 in that bracket. Reward said I was 6th place, got the 6-25th place reward. Kinda sucks that I was (sorta) cheated out of a mythic, but I’m not sure posting on the forum is gonna get me my mythic back…

So yeah, I agree and all. More importantly I just needed to post because everyone in this thread (besides Ekkias), I have probably played in PVP at least a half dozen times (I’m jackburton in game) and you guys are all on my “sideboard” list

This is the first time that I had 0 crashes in this event. I scored 70 and came in first. I would have finished fifth or better in all events if it wasn’t for crashes. Congratulations to all top tier players your decks were well built and tough to battle. I side 2 to 3 answers for UGC everytime I play a green deck just in case;). The unacceptable Idea that anyone could be the first person to achieve a score and then be knocked down several positions is a JOKE. Wizards of the coast play tests 2 to 3 sets ahead in the future future league. I suggest the devs take a page from WOTCs book and do the same.

I completely agree that the scoreboard and tiebreakers (if any) are confusing right now, and some official clarification on how they work would be extremely helpful, but in this particular case it looks as though there were 5 players in this bucket all tied for 1st with 69 when all was said and done, so 67 would have resulted in rank 6-25 competition rewards instead of rank 1-5 ones.

In case it helps to resolve any confusion, here’s a screenshot of the leaderboard with under 2 minutes remaining, so in all likelihood it should be accurate within +/-1 point for everyone (the images are spliced together for convenience; the unedited originals are here and here):

I’m not positive of this, but I believe the last player to reach 69 fought several battles during the last hour, so that might explain how 67 could have appeared as a top 5 score until close to (or possibly even shortly after) the end of the event, depending on who fought when and how long the leaderboard took to update correctly.

Regardless of what happened in this instance, I can definitely sympathize with anyone who might have been bumped to a lower bracket in NoP due to a tie, or who isn’t sure whether or not that happened, and it would be great to get some clarification on how the system actually works; I haven’t had it happen yet personally, but it’s rapidly becoming my 2nd worst fear in an otherwise highly competitive and enjoyable event, behind only the occasional enemy red planeswalker who decides to mysteriously freeze up and force an unwarranted loss. Hopefully both issues will be resolved sooner rather than later, so that everyone can enjoy the new set and future event cycles to the fullest extent possible.

In the meantime, may all red AI’s spontaneously combust, and may everyone’s NoP opponents run both Jace and Nissa.

P.S. On an unrelated side note, congrats to Gideon on finishing with 70/70; I haven’t seen all of the buckets or final leaderboards, but that’s the first instance I’m aware of in which someone wound up with a perfect record in Gold, and it’s definitely a nice feather in the cap considering all of the myriad broken Kiora, Koth, and other decks floating around waiting to wreak havoc off of an untimely AI cascade or 10.

Thanks Dodecapod. That’s how I thought the leader board works. I assume all five players who scored 69/70 in that bracket got “1st” when they claimed their reward, and all the 67/70 players got “6th”.

It’s confusing, but at least fair.

Thanks for the screenshot Dodedapod, that seems to clear up the result for this round, at least.

However, as a player who seems to regularly lose 3 games and am therefore always fighting to stay in the top 5, I expect this will happen again! And if not to me, then to someone else.

And of course, while players in the top 5 have the luxury of being able to take a screenshot, is is not yet clear that players straddling a bracket can safely do so without dropping into the lower bracket.

I have a friend who dislikes this event but I told him that there is no harm in entering the event so he clicked join and forgot to play any games. So when it was rewards time I asked him how he did.obviously he was in the bronze bracket. He showed me a screen shot of 1st place rewards a mythic and fat pack.He has done this 3 times now and tomorrow will be his fourth. Top rewards for not playing and it doesn’t affect leader boards. This event is so FUBAR. I told him to keep going because who doesn’t like free stuff. Any thoughts.

I had this happen, too. I play mostly on my Android, but also have an iPad. I barely play the iPad account, but I usually log in for free cards or play a few rounds when it’s convenient. Anyway, twice I’ve joined the PvP event and not had a chance to play, and wound up getting first place, and the accompanying prize. Last time, however, this didn’t work, so I figured it must have been a fixed bug.

I have a theory as to why people seem to “go to the bottom” when checking their scores. I really don’t think it’s a function of checking the leaderboard. But perhaps the position ranking when tied for the same score is due when the match began, and not when it ended. For example, I finish the match and am at 60 points. Shteev finishes the round after me and is also at 60 points. I check the boards and to my surprise, Shteev is out ranking me! Because Shteev began the match before me, he is ranked higher. This would make one believe that “checking” is lowering ones ranking when in truth it’s a function of when the match began. Just a theory, feel free to poke holes in it. --Wyrven

Not when the person who outranked me by having the same score did so after an hour of me reaching that score. I have had this happen.
And guess what, after that i stopped checking the leaderboard after finishing my matches and i keep my position among the people with my same score who reach it after me

How do you know you are retaining the same spot if you are no longer checking the leaderboard?

Just being on the event screen (without checking the scoreboard) gives you a ranking number.
