Hi everyone! a bit of backstory comes with this post:
I love to design paper MtG cards, its just something I enjoy doing, the creativity of it appeals to me. and so once the Aether Revolt full set list came out I decided to design some for MtG:PQ, with the goal being ingenuity and creativity. these are the goals because:
-
I can’t make practical cards very well, as I cannot test them. this makes it extremely difficult to judge a cards power if I can’t see how it plays out in-game.
-
I prefer making fun, interesting cards anyway!
so please, keep that in mind when reading my designs, they aren’t built for the metagame in Puzzle Quest and are simply for fun. maybe at some point I’ll try making some practical cards, but a lot of the balancing I’d have to do would be based off of guesswork.also, I’m not touching on rarity, some of these cards might be common-worthy. others might surpass mythic standards, doesn’t matter much to me.
(Edit: as per request I’ll put a little note on each of the rarity of the cards)Here is part 1 of the cards I’ve designed!

AetherSphere Harvester (colourless)
16 mana, Creature (rare)
crew 3, Flying
when AetherSphere Harvester enters the battlefield, energize 2.
Overload 1 AetherSphere Harvester gains lifelink until the end of turn
8/8so with this card I threw in the Energize 2 just to make it similar to the paper card. originally this was crew 4, but I felt that was to much even for a fun theoretical card. obviously if this was an actual card it would be an auto include in Nahiri Zoo, and could potentially be too good in that deck, but I feel like this is a well rounded card, I did try and balance this one somewhat for the actual game. I’m pretty happy with how this turned out
Planar Bridge (colourless)
20 mana, support, 3 shields. (Rare/Mythic)
Activate 3: fetch the next card in your library, it gains full mana.before I go any further I want to mention that I decided not to touch Energy very much (yes I know, I know the card just above uses energy) because at the time of designing these cards, energy sucked. It really sucked. So I came to the decision that my cards would seem cooler if they didnt use energy, and it is one of the most difficult abilities to balance and figure out the power level of. with that said, I do like the actual Planar Bridge - Its creative, which appeals to me greatly right off the bat. I’m not sure how OL3 will play out with it, but I suppose only time will tell. My version is simpler, but i designed it with Pyromancers Goggles in mind, its basically a cheaper, but more random version of that. Probably a pretty bad useless card, but still something that could be interesting if it actually were a card in PQ
Fatal Push

2 mana, spell (uncommon)
Destroy target creature with power 6 or less.something I really like doing is creating cards for different levels or styles of play (think different formats in paper MtG) and while this card won’t be seeing play in high level platinum any time soon, I can guarantee that it would see play in low level Bronze or Silver. a card that would get used, but only by a certain audience, I’m very proud of the depth in this one.
Heart of Kiran (colourless)
10 mana, Creature (rare/mythic - it’d really depend on how good it would turn out in reality.)
Crew 3, Flying
Whenever you match planeswalker gems this creature gets +4/+4 until the end of turn.
When this creature deals combat damage to your opponent convert 4 gems to planeswalker gems
5/5you want to talk about creativity? ^^^^^^^^
I was really hoping that the actual Heart of Kiran would do something with planeswalker gems, its something we haven’t seen before and it would be really interesting to see some interaction with them for the first time. I will admit to being disappointed when I first saw Heart of Kiran. My version probably isn’t OP, but its interaction with planeswalker gems is interesting. I really hope we see something like this in the future
(you there JC?
)Aether Geode Miner

7 mana, creature (rare)
when Aether Geode Miner enters the battlefield, Energize 3.
when your opponent takes damage, Energize 2
Overload 2 restore this creature to full power and toughness
4/6so, without the Aether Revolt cards we have, this isn’t broken. With them, welllllll… I’m certain there’d be a way to break this. the third ability isn’t to powerful, and is pretty much just tacked on there cuz why not. But the second ability is an interesting one. direct damage and energy don’t exactly go great together, and this would have to be played in a red/white deck to make full use of it. (or maybe Blue/White with Thopter Pie network and Psychic Rebuttal?) but the combination is interesting nonetheless. I think this would be quite a niche card, but would probably see play somewhere, if only Nahiri Zoo for the P/T to cost Ratio.
And that’s all for part 1 of my Aether Revolt cards! there will be more! I’ll show you my take on the legendary creature cycle, and the Expertises! what do you think of my designs? good? bad? just plain awesome? let me know! I’d love to hear your thoughts and your take on Aether Revolt!
