From the gladiator arenas of Mojoworld to the battles of MARVEL Puzzle Quest, Shatterstar (Gaveedra Seven) slices his way into the roster as the next 5-Star! Here’s a preview of how he’ll slice his way through the competition.
Shatterstar slices through the fabric of reality, creating tears between universes. Select and create an X-shaped Portal on the board, teleporting up to 5 tiles away, gain 1 AP for each tile teleported in its color. The resulting shockwaves created by the portal deal 2658 damage to the target.
Shatterstar takes note of his enemies’ attacks and plans ahead. Create 2 2-turn Yellow Shatterstar Repeater tile(s), when this tile activates, heal for 443 health.
If there are at least 3 Shatterstar Repeater tiles on the board, heal for 2126 health instead of creating Repeater tiles.
(PASSIVE) If Shatterstar takes damage 3 times in the same turn, adapt and learn to counter it. Reflect 38% damage.
Reflected damage increases by 3.25% after each time he takes damage this turn, up to 4% . Reset damage increase to 0% after the end of the enemy player’s turn.
I don’t know what a “portal” is in MPQ, I’m guessing that’s just a fancy way to say “destroy tiles in the shape of an X.”
The damage reflecting passive (reflect 50% of all damage he takes after the second hit) seems like an answer to the infinites, but lots of them will just oneshot him.
Just to give a serious reply fairly early on so it doesn’t get lost if devs read this back…
Great to have communication again this week! Appreciate it.
Like the choice of character. Like the direction of the powers overall. Think it just skews slightly towards caution, but it’s close enough that I can’t be certain that Shatterstar won’t be a big deal. The fact that all the caps on the multipliers are less than 2x the first step looks like a mistake but it could be right?
Better to be cautious than overdo it so I see it as a positive overall. Good progress!
Looks interesting enough - damage reflection serves a clear purpose, but I don’t think he’ll force his way onto many PvP teams due to being middling overall.
I think there are still some issues with the figures though, as the max percent values for both yellow and red make no sense e.g. “When a purple, yellow, or red friendly match is made, increase Shockwave Slash by 28% up to a maximum of 36%.” Why bother scaling if the first instance gets you almost to the cap? Also there’s no wording that suggests Shockwave Slash ever resets, which in conjunction with cap basically being a single friendly match means it may as well have just had the damage increase baked in.
Looks interesting, but (like always), bunch of questions
Purple - 9 is a bit expensive for a power that doesn’t seem very strong. But no idea what teleporting tiles means or does. Is it just a thematic X destruction like wolverine? Can get a little AP I guess but the damage seems very low for all the effort and RNG.
Yellow - Repeaters and heals are both pretty meh. Is this true healing? That might make it more useful, but still not exciting or good at all. Doesn’t really fit the whole “takes note of enemies’ attacks and plans ahead” either. Think this part of the power should just be scrapped/changed lol
Passive yellow - Much better. A very unique power, and passive, will make him someone to pull for. Though the math doesn’t make sense. Like people mentioned, why are shatterstar’s powers all incremented in weird #s that easily hit and overshoot his cap.
Red - Uh…the damage also seems insanely low? Like, a 1-2 Spidey does more with 6 red I think. Yeah it can stun for 2 turns too but the numbers still seem way too low. UNLESS…again, the numbers make no sense. If it kept getting stronger and stronger it’d be a very strong finishing move. But, then does it reset? If it just goes up 1.2x and that’s it, it’s weak/sad/pointless.
Oh also, I’ve never heard of this guy. Can you guys please get back to releasing animals and TV/movie characters and stop giving us literal whos from the 90s? Has he even been in a movie?
Most of this comes down to the team not knowing wtf they’re doing. I hate saying it so plainly, but lord am I over this.
To the character creators:
Purple: too expensive and mostly useless unless they’ve told us wrong here. Powers that help AP gain are not a bad thing, you’re being weird about it because you overtuned War and we liked her. Not this character… but what is your obsession with making cascades not create AP? It’s weird dude(ette)s.
Yellow: omg, how many times do you have to hear that heals are entirely worthless? No one is playing this game in a way that they need mid-round healing. That’s a lost battle from the start. The passive element says he’s intended to counter characters that make cascades. Look back up at what I said as an aside. No one cares about cascades, they’re not actually that punishing unless you already bit off more than you can chew.
Red: Cool, an almost direct damage power! Except the starting value is trash and not worth firing ever. I hope that’s an error. There is some promise in this ability IF the numbers are wrong.
I’m not asking you to redefine the meta or anything like that, at this point I’d just like you to design a 5* character whose powers make me actually want to play them for fun.
I don’t mind Shatterstar as an addition to the game at all. He’s one of rhe most recognizable LGTBQ characters not in game yet (Rictor and Karma may be the only other two that have been in enough stories and series to be fairly well known).
It’s fine if he’s being added for Pride Month adjacent reasons, but a bit odd to get him before Longshot or Mojo or Spiral. Hopefully they are coming soon.
Come on now. They were all annoying to various degrees at various times. Feral, Sunspot, Siryn…for me were more annoying. At least Shatterstar got developed later on.
I don’t think he’s very good (probably? again they keep changing this stuff pre release), but not for the reasons you do.
The damage reflection isn’t about cascades, it’s about infinite teams. The idea is that the little baby Hawkeyes beat you by hitting you like 3000 times before you get a turn, so running this guy will mean they die before they can do that. Juggernaut does something similar.
He has a healing power to keep him alive longer/make him more annoying on defense.
He won’t do anything because counter characters in MPQ don’t do anything unless they’re “meta” on their own. His other powers aren’t strong enough on offense (probably? Who knows what they’ll actually do?) to drag him around just for defensive value. Also Hawkeye/May just oneshots him anyway, and he’s not reflecting anything when he’s dead.
I appreciate them trying to do stuff like this, but it doesn’t work and it’ll never work. Just bite the bullet and do the nerfs, guys, you’re going to end up doing them anyway after you try and fail with 6 more of these.
