Paladin of Atonement effect inconsistent

If I have Paladin of Atonement in play, then drop Champion of Dusk, the damage does not always trigger Paladin of Atonement’s effect. It’s intermittent. I am not sure why it triggers sometimes and other times it does not.
I noticed also, that if I drop Eliminate the Competition, Paladin of Atonement’s effect sometimes does not trigger and sometimes it does.

Also, I just saw that Read the Bones does not consistently trigger Paladin of Atonement.

Anyone else notice this inconsistent behavior?

Are you counting the gems on the board? The Paladin has an 8+ clause in its effect.

Son of a… that must be it. Sorry for the confusion.
Seems like there are enough gems on the board.. but I have not counted them.
