Patch and HP refer to two things each
HP = Hit Points (to anyone who actually play RPGs) and Hero Points
Patch = game versions and a wolverine alt
Alternatives: Hero Credits (seriously, they’re fucking currency) and Tuxedo (or something) Wolverine

The developers of this game did not come up with Wolverine’s “Patch” alias, it has been around for a long time in the comics:

And as far as HP, I know what you’re saying, I’m a long time rpg-er and have to force my brain not to make that reference when reading these boards, but really HP is just a shorthand used here. It is never referred to as HP in the game. And character’s health is actually referred to as “Health” in the game.
Maybe even Hero Coins, seeing as how the icons are gold coins.
I’d like to see more work on the PVP done before anymore cosmetics are performed. I mean the size of the skip button is bigger, yeah, but there is still a broken MMR and plenty of character balancing that is in the works. Lets not forget about the PVE event thingy thing that is going on. Some people may be willing to play a game where you need to purposefully lose many times in a row in order to win, but I don’t believe that was the intention there.
