This might be an out there idea…but I suspect that the spelling ‘afoul’ is meant to be a reference not to Howard, but the character whose comic he debuted in, Man-Thing. After all, Man-Thing is made of rotten plant material and would smell pretty ‘foul’
I think we should all burn excitedly at the touch of this idea!
