what determines your matchup/bracket

i am a newish player.. roughly 75 days in.. have 5 lvl 94’s now.. i am a 2* player atm.. i have spent every HP i get on opening roster spots.. i am at 28/28 currently.. hoarding 3* and the one 4* i have for transitioning

in the current season 3 tourney which ends soon i have roughly 8700 points.. which ranks me near 430ish

an alliance member who has a roster of 17 and 4 lvl 94’s and 8400 points for season 3 is in his top 25

is it roster size that has dumped me into a stronger bracket?

I’ve come to the conclusion that there is a room full of crack-addled monkeys that determines PVP matchups.

Essentially, as soon as you have one 3* that is some degree of ‘high enough’, you’re screwed and popped into the same bracket as other folks with fully loaded 3* teams.

PVP matching is just flat out terrible in this game. The absolutely best parts:

  1. skipping someone and have them show up on that node again (never mind showing up 4-5 times in a row)
  2. the 2* cliff: there is always some amount of points where after you slog your way through 3s, you get nothing but ‘free points’ from 2 folks. Plus you’ll see them again and again for a while, so you get to beat them up over and over.

No. Your alliance-mate entered his first event of the season one or many days/tournaments after you did.

yeah, season bracket placement is based on when you first do a match in shield sim or PVP. After that, brackets are determined by some sort of secret way in which the devs think it matches players evenly but it normally doesn’t work.
