When to begin transition to 4*?

I have 15 3* already maxed out and championed (the highest is now 173); with 6 more already fully covered and a bunch waiting for their last 1 or 2 covers. Should I begin transition to 4* realm?

I have 16 unopened LTs and 235 CPs, but i only HPs for 2 more slots on my roster. I really dread opening those LTs.

Or is it better to have a full roster of championed 3*?

On the other hand, the last Simulator event proved to me that even championed 3* roster is dwarfed by 4* even when underlevelled. I got by, but only barely. What should I do?

Couple of things:
What 3s do you have champed? Not all 3s are created equal, so if, say, Sentry or Rags are in your 15 that doesn’t account for much, meanwhile if you don’t have First or Iron Man 40 leveled yet they’re well worth going back for.

What 4s do you currently have covered? Once you start really leveling your 4*s your scaling is going to change, so you want to hold back on that until you have someone worth ringing that bell for. Hulkbuster, Iceman, Rulk, Jean Grey, L-Thor, all the regulars you see in PVP are the ones you want to watch for. But if all you’ve got are dregs like Star Lord, Invisible Woman, and Cho Hulk, you’re better off waiting.

How many 3s do you get on a regular basis/how badly do you need/want HP? Once you go into 4* territory most of your 3s are going to become useless in most situations. Iron Fist, Ironman 40, Switch, and KK are pretty much the only 3s actively used, with occasional appearances with some upper tiers if boosted. The only thing they’ll be good for is feeding covers into for champ rewards; in other words they’re investments that will pay off over time. But how much those investments are worth depend on how many covers you pull in. If you’re pulling in 2-3 per PvE or something then yeah, worth it to keep champing, but if you’re struggling to break top 100 in PVP or make progression rewards / only getting it from the dailies, then fudge it.

Yeah, those are the tings to consider, in order of importance. Just remember you can’t un-ring that bell. Once you make the full transition there’s no going back to the 3*s.

Oh, and one more thing. There’s a couple of 4s that are good in 4 teams that don’t pair well with 3s. The ones I listed above pair well with 3s in my experience, but if you’re not sure check some of the character discussion threads.

Zyrook makes some very good points and the answers to those questions will drive our advice. Here are some additional tidbits to consider.

Remember, when you break the seal on those, you don’t have to open them all. I would suggest taking it slow and only opening until you hit what you can afford to roster. This was the biggest change I’ve made in the past 6 months and it has been huge for my stress levels. I hated worrying that a cover was going to die on the vine. I’ve banked over 1000CP in the past which is a drop in the bucket compared to what some folks have done.

I had around the same number of champed 3s when I moved into 4s originally. Now I have all but 2 champed and those will be done within the next season. I’ve been going back and champing them to get the rewards train moving even faster.

The key like Zyrook pointed out is which ones do you have champed. If you want to move to 4* land, you want those support characters champed.

To answer your inquiry: I’ve so far champed 3* Hulk, Gamora, Thor, Wolvie, BP, KK, CMarvel, Doom, GSBW, Torch, SRogers, Hood, IF, Mystique, Blade. I’m hoarding ISOs for IM40 and SWitch next.

So far, I have acquired 4* CHulk, XFW, Cyclops, GRider, Carnage, JG, GoT, Electra, IW, MMorales, Fury, Ant Man, XFPool, HBuster, Nova, ProfX, Quake, RHulk, SGwen, Star Lord, Punisher; all in various stages of covers, but I haven’t spent any ISO for them. So far, I have only acquired them through event rewards, Daily Supply or lucky Heroic/Event/DDQ Tokens.

I usually go for T50 or T100 in events, always going for 25CP recently. So, 2-3 3* covers each event, except in times when RL really messes up with play time. I should have a lot more CPs, but I’ve been using some of them to buy covers for some 3* that are hard to come by like SWitch. However, I’m not doing well enough in PVP to get to 800, so I only do PVP for HPs.

While you are sitting on a trove Legend tokens and CP, none of your 4s are really covered at the moment. So you’re not at risk of wasting 4 covers due to 3* champ rewards. For the time being I’d focus on pulling a few more of your utility 3s up. Switch, Ironman, and Cyclops are the obvious ones, Deadpool is worth it if you using him in the dailies to amass DP points to spend instant-winning Gauntlet or Boss nodes. I’m well into 4 land now, but I still find myself using Magneto, Cage, and (believe it or not) Quicksilver.

You definitely want Switch and Ironman before anything else. Honestly I’d say get another 5 champed and see where you stand.

Edit: Once you get a good number of 3*s champed you’ll start to see your HP troubles ease up. I’ve got 33 champed, and between them, daily rewards, progression, and the occasional lucky taco my HP generation is outpacing character releases. If you’re not spending HP on shields it’s kinda shocking how quickly it adds up these days.

just understand that opening LTs and using cp for classics will inevitably lead to 4*s you don’t have (you have 22 of the 38-ish characters so far). if you can roster new ones at will, go for it. otherwise, other than about 4 or 5 at the bottom that won’t matter much (MFer, Cho, IW, etc.), selling 4s isn’t very fun. other than roster slots, there is no reason for you not to open them.

I think I will go with Zyrook’s advice to hold out on opening LTs or using CPs for classics–at least as I wait for HPs to buy roster slots. I will focus on championing more 3*; IM40, SWitch and Cyclops are already on the shortlist. I’m feeling better already, I will resist that tempation to click on the LTs. icon_e_biggrin.gif

However, should I sell CHulk, IW to open up new slots? They are at least useful for required character nodes, which is vital in getting to T100 for me. And while we’re at it, which ones of the 4* that can be skipped? Which ones to keep?

If you have the HP for a slot, then open tokens until you get someone new and then stop. When you afford another slot, do it again. Keep one slot in reserve for new releases.

Asap. Try to always roster 4-stars when you get them making transitioning easier. When you have one 4-star championed, and several 3-stars (20-40), you can begin your transition. 3-stars are important because you get 4-star covers from them and 2-stars are important because you get 3-star covers from them.

I wouldn’t for that exact reason. With them, you can complete those Essential nodes and maybe even start pushing towards Top 50s to get even more HP.

As terrible as those two are, 4s are hard to come by. Always use HP first for new slots. If you have to sell characters sell off the excess 2s. Keep 1-2 for the DDQ and one slot to cycle out the required 2*s for the PvE.

Or you can play the long game and actually work on getting all your 2s champed and start turning those covers into HP and such. I actually expanded my 2s by 1 when they upped the resell value of a full champ.
