Where is the Heroic Mode?

It’ll be a while before I’ve finalised my thoughts and even longer before I’ve worked out an eloquent way to express them, but so far I’m a big fan of the new mode.

Being able to opt in to just the nodes you think are worth it is great. Upgraded tokens is great. Forced creativity is fun. I actually used Havok today! (As part of a strategy, not just to be able to say I had used him!)

It does feel like it’d be nicer if there was also a points bump and I’m afraid that PvP may be a car crash. Although, I’d probably grind some PvP with Multiple Man turn 1s for the high chance of pulling 2s and 3s after matches.

The challenge node with Carnage was a LOT harder today. I wiped a few times, but ended up using the same team as before, but with Lucky on Multiple Man. He tanks almost everything for me, and he makes so many special tiles that the healing from Lucky was enough to keep him alive.

Want to add something from trying my hand at Heroic last night. You can switch back to regular by retreating from the match. It has to be the first match of the node and you have to retreat before all three of your characters are downed. You don’t get locked in unless you win(down all enemies) or lose(all your characters are downed) the first match in a node.

My meaningless 2 cents here…

Honestly I think the implementation is great, all things considered. For reference ive got a decently developed roster with a handful of 550s but nothing crazy (and no super juiced X-men other than Sunspot). I play for progression never placement.

I’m personally just doing the Challenge Node (classic token is basically 20CP DAILY for one clear, cant pass that up) and 5E (it’s a significant jump in CP over normal). I just do one clear on the CN since you still have plenty of points for full progression and it’s not worth the struggle after that.

So I can mindlessly blast through the rest of the nodes with my brain turned off and then get to do a handful of matches where I strategize and actually pay attention. Not locking you into heroic for every node is amazing as I would never want to slog through the entire event with a limited roster.

I’m not sure how long its taking for your team to beat them, but if you dont mind it taking a couple mins (roughly 2 to 4) I came out full health every time with:

  • Magneto5 w/ Refreshment Cart
  • Ascended Miltiman4 w/ Cuckoos
  • Ascended Magik3 w/ Lucky

The idea is to ability spam as much as possible to get Mags blue and the infinite starts pretty fast (dont tell Borstock). Ideally you use Mags blue on black, then spam MM yellow on black and yellow to get more blue, first.

Magiks pink and red are both excellent for this combo, plus she heals full from Lucky. MM green to heal him naturally also. To speed it up get your black and let 1 turn pass, Magik will go Limbo and shushaa.

If you were to use boosts it would start very fast - turn 1. Or swap MM with Namor5 w/ Atlantis if youre feeling sassy. His black helps.

Awesome, def will try it. I was thinking someone should start a “Heroic Mode Teams” thread if we’re gonna have these set groups for 20+ days - would be great to share and see what everyone else is doing.

Also, quick shoutout to you WB for your pvp thread and YouTube vids, lot of great outside the box stuff there

@Daiches Not surprising whatsoever. I’d be shocked if that didn’t happen.

It didn’t help that thread that Heroics never showed up so there were no teams to test.

It also probably didn’t help that the boost list expected had nothing to do with the heroic restrictions!

So all in all…yeah!

This worked but it was a lot slower for me than the Multiple Man strikespam team. I think there’s something there though…need to play around a little more.

I’m not saying anything new, but I played heroic for the first time, so I finally feel like I can have an opinion.

  • The rewards are not better enough to warrant more time spent for worse placement. In some ways, like with standard tokens omitted, the rewards are a reason to NOT play heroic mode.
  • No boosted characters in heroic mode is ridiculous at SCL10. My hope was that heroic would force people to try different teams, but it ends up highlighting the deficiencies of most characters instead. It forces the player to find the cheese team from what’s available and only use that or lose. The scaling was not designed for this mode and no boosted characters.
  • You would think having the option of heroic for each individual node would benefit the player, but having to change teams is a hassle because of the way saved teams and supports work. It’s not even so much the added time it takes as much as it is all of the extra clicks. It feels like work and motivates me to pick one or the other for all nodes.
  • Characters required for daily quests should never be locked out of heroic.
