x-force (original lineup)??

why are we seeing juvenile characters, in the sense they are relatively-new entries in the Marvel universe, added to the game while many classic characters, particularly x-men/x-force (original lineup) sit on the shelves? Is it a licensing issue? I just can’t understand why priority would be given to this mockingbird character while characters such as Cable/Bishop and Apocalypse, or Gambit, Rogue, and Nightcrawler are begging for additions to this game…I’m sure your main fan base has been clamoring for these entries for some time.

With all due respect, please apprise us of what it is that informs the decisions to greenlight a character addition to the game and or why others are not added.

Would really love to know.

While I sympathise with your frustration at the lack of X-characters in the game, you do realise though that Mockingbird is a very classic character? She predates some of the characters you mentioned in your post.

They need to own a license for the character to put it in the game. I don’t have the complete list, but it’s clear they’ve got rights to Avengers, Inhumans, Spiderman (and his gallery), Agents of SHIELD, Guardians, Dr. Strange, and Fantastic Four. They do not have the rights to X-men or “mutants”, except for legacies or one-off deals. Most of that belongs to Sony.

The rehashes and multiples are common because the IP is already owned, so there’s no additional cost. Plus the art assets are mostly recycled. The newer cadre of characters is both “current” to attract a younger audience, as well as unburdened by the IP issues that were introduced when Marvel sold off some of its properties to stay afloat in the 90’s.

Moockingbird has been around since the early 80’s. Sure, she’s newer than Nightcrawler, but she was introduced before Gambit, and a full decade before X-Force.

They can’t use Cable, because after they got done with his character model and insufferably phallic weaponry, there’d be no room on the screen for a match-3 game.

Bobbi’s first appearance was in 1971. She only first started using the “Mockingbird” name in the early 80’s.

The only original member of X-Force (the original X-Men) that is missing is Angel. Otherwise we have two Scotts, two Jeans, Bobby, Hank, and Prof X.

The list of mutants and X-characters in the game is actually quite numerous. It just seems glaring because MPQ is missing some really popular characters - namely Rogue, Gambit, and Nightcrawler (edit: and Dazzler).

You’re thinking of X-Factor, not X-Force.

nah–x-force was the original group with Cable, Domino, Shatterstar, etc. sometimes there are crossovers with the group rosters for all the X-“groups.” X-factor was more an offshoot of x-men.

This is not at all true. Do not confuse owning the movie rights with not owning any rights at all.
For one thing, X-men and mutant based Marvel super heroes are owned by Fox only in terms of movie rights. TV rights are up in the air, it’s a legal grey area. Marvel and Fox both have a claim, which is why things like Legion are ambiguous in their creation.

In terms of video games, Marvel owns the rights to do whatever they want with the characters. The same is true for merchandising, Marvel can make whatever X-men merchandise they want. Ever noticed a new X-men film is not met with a ton of new toys and clothing and stuff?

Marvel is currently on a “No X-men” kick. No new X-men are being created and any video games and such do not promote the characters. MPQ will not likely get any X-men for the foreseeable future. Anyone hoping to see Wolverine back in Marvel Vs Capcom is going to be disappointed.

As for MPQ in general, they will mostly be creating characers that help boost the comics and movie studios, drawing attention to new stories or popular characters to tie in with the movies. We got a run of Spider Man characters to tie in with Homecoming, for instance.

You mentioned Sony in your comment, the only thing they have the movie rights to is Spider Man. I believe they might have the video game rights to Spider Man as well. The new Spider Man movie as part of the MCU came about with Sony and Marvel setting up a contrat where they compromised and co-operated for mutual gain.

TL;DR Marvel owns damn near all their rights in terms of video games. They can add whatever they want, and what they want is whatever helps boost the popularity of their other products.

That’s a lot of a characters for original x-force. I think boomer and Shatterstar would be great additions though.

I think cannonball would be too much like nova.

Likewise warpath too much like Collossus.

Domino would be interesting but I think she would turn out like mystique or g4mora.

Beyond x force, it’s a shame on this game that archangel isn’t a character in some form.

Oh, yeah-yeah-yeah. Didn’t X-Force basically come from the shattered remnants of the New Mutants?

I get that people want more X-Men, and there are some notable absences. But that can be said about the entire Marvel universe.

Missing X-Men, we’ve easily got Angel, Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, Rogue, Gabmit, Cable, an equal list of villains (Blob, Sabertooth, Emma Frost, Apocalypse, Sentinels, etc), and still be missing dozens of characters (Havok, Bishop, Forge, Jubilee, Rachel Summers, Domino, etc; and that’s leaving out Magic, Magma, Sunspot, Warlock, Cannonball, Danger, Warpath, Fantomex, Hope Summers, Vulcan, Legion, X-Man, Banshee, Mimic, Caliban, Marrow, Copycat, so on, and so forth).

And that’s NOT counting possible variants we could have in-game. A stronger Juggernaut. Non-teen versions of Iceman/Jean. Hell, teen versions of Beast/Cyke. Or other versions of characters that could be added (young Jubilee and vampire Jubilee, or Angel/Archangel, etc)

But there are just as many non X-Men missing as well. Classic Avengers, Hank Pym, Hercules, Wonder Man, Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau), Starfox, Namor, Doctor Druid, Quasar, US Agent.

Or more modern Avengers. Sharon Carter, Richard Rider, Valkyrie, Captain Britain, Doctor Voodoo, Wiccan, Hulkling, Eric O’Grady’s Ant-Man, or Nadia Pym’s Wasp, etc.

And plenty of others that could be added that aren’t Avengers, either. Spidey could add Black Cat, Scorpion, Rhino, Mysterio, Kraven, Hobgoblin, Electro, Shocker, Silk, Ben Reilly, Miguel O’Hara, etc. We could flesh out the Ultimates with America Chavez, Blue Marvel, and Spectrum (Monica Rambeau, as mentioned earlier). More Guardians of the Galaxy from multiple eras, Yondu, Moondragon, Mantis, Adam Warlock, Starhawk, Angela, Major Victory, etc. Or more street-level heroes. Jessica Jones, Misty Knight, Colleen Wing, Hellcat? Or Asgardians, Sif, the Warriors Three, Angela, Beta Ray Bill?

What about strictly joke/comical characters? Spider-Ham? Throg? Deadpool the Duck? Dazzler?

The reality is, there are TONS of characters “missing”, and X-Men aren’t getting special treatment. Any time a character gets added, for any reason, it delays adding every other character. People complain that they haven’t added X-Men in forever, but if they sat down and added a third of the X-Men people have been asking for, we’d have people complaining that there are all these non X-Men characters that are getting skipped over.

In fact, I bet you can find people that are equally as desperate for more new X-Men characters, that could give you t5 lists that have nothing in common. The only real reason it seems like X-Men are missing more than any other group is because there are so damn many of them in the first place.

I hope to God they get around to Jessica Jones when Defenders comes along. Maybe a 2* Black Outfit Daredevil to go along with a 4* red armoured Daredevil.

Would be cool if they did Warriors 3 like Cloak & Dagger, switching between three power sets.

Actually, Dazzler was intended to be a pretty serious character - I remember reading those classic X-Men when she appeared - she was one of two mutants who were very powerful and Prof X and Emma Frost (who was also a new character at the time,) were racing to recruit them both! :slight_smile:

Absolutely. Dazzler was also a major part of the X-Men in the Siege Perilous era (I always remember it as the Marc Silvestri era) and I greatly enjoyed her presence in the book. Though he didn’t create her, Claremont had a soft spot for Dazzler and it really came out in his writing.

But Dazzler was absolutely a serious character. Her 42 issue solo series was no joke, and Dazzler: the Movie was an incredible graphic novel where Allison dealt with her quest for fame and being outed as a mutant, which subjected her to ‘mutie’ racism - a dark thing that was portrayed very realistically in Marvel books in those days.

Isn’t the Inhuman storyline a partial result of the bad licensing agreements that have plagued Marvel? genuine question.
