I’m sorry to be a whiner; I really do love this game; but it’s driving me a little nuts that, despite rampant and obvious sentiment on the forums that we DO NOT WANT rehashed gold characters, D3 still persists in releasing 3 out of 4 new characters as gold.
Ice, is it possible that these three gold characters were already developed before Gold Thor shipped, and thus were going to come out anyway, regardless of player response?
Please give us some sort of assurance that 75% of new characters from here on out are going to be gold and thus not really new characters at all. If that’s the case, D3 has clearly stopped developing the game and is just hoping to suck as much money out of HP sales for character slots as they can until everyone wises up and erases the app.
I am almost certain (100% guess lol) that other than ragnarok pre nerf lazy thor probably is the best selling cover in a short period of time they have ever had. He is very good, ppl like thor (its not like its black panther lvl of notability), and ppl already grew to liking the cover, on top of which he has SHINY stars.
We can gate it all we like, but if ppl say “I hate it. Buuuut, the cover is really good and I don’t wanna wait buys” then all that vitriol accounts for nada in the decision making process because wallets speak louder than words.
I love fathor, and I am really looking forward to Gold Daken, he should be a total badass. I just wish they had done a better job of upgrading Captain America though. Just because a subset of players bitches about anything and everything does not mean their constant complaining should be heeded. It is enough that their point of view is heard. Repeating yourself does not make your position any more correct.
For the record, I bitch about almost nothing. This strikes me as lazy and poor game design, though, regardless of the economic sense it may make to D3. I’m just as entitled to state my opinion as you are, as long as I’m not abusing anyone, thank you very much.
We forumites are a massive minority but thankfully our voice is heard much louder then our numbers would imply.
I personally don’t mind Gold versions of well liked characters. And so far that seems to be all that D3 has been making.
So it’s understandable and is keeping the masses happy while allowing the devs focus on other issues so overall win/win.
I’ve personally never been a fan and hardly ever used the 2* of any of the golds they are releasing but im just one voice in a massive sea and completely understand why they are doing this.

No, just that most players aren’t anywhere in the range of sitting with a few maxed 3s so focusing our efforts on more 4s at the moment would result in a bunch of characters that largely go unused and functionally are trophies for the vast majority of the player base.
I know, right?! We must have similar schedules, or strategies, or both. Maybe eventually I’ll have the roster to attack you, and then it will be more fun for me. ;-p
Yeah, apparently 2** Thor was their previous cash cow so they went all out on Lazy Thor to make him as attractive as possible. Having heard the justifications from IceIX, I don’t really mind the rehash nature of the gold characters anymore. And there’s definitely nothing wrong with enticing people into spending money by making characters appealing.
However, what I still very much dislike, and which Lazy Thor is a great example of, is the power creep that’s started to become all too apparent with the past few releases. They shouldn’t throw every idea of a balanced stat budget out the window to make people want to buy his, or BP’s, covers; it will only hurt the game in the long(er) run. I’m really hoping these two were just honest mishaps, but time will tell.
Gold Daken… I have mixed feelings about this one. I’m pretty sure Gold Daken will be just about the most annoying hero to face, given how annoying he is even as a 2*!
It seems they aren’t adding a third skill to him, and although IceX said that Daken will have “tweaked” versions of his skills, it looks to be remaining the same: strike tiles and healing. Perhaps they won’t be passive any longer, or require different amounts of matches to trigger?
Daken was the first 2* I maxed back in the day, to help me transition into a stronger 2* and 3* roster. I’m not sure if I’d like to use his Gold version though. They should really just buff X-Force first, to make 4* finally worth it, and to give people something to work towards..
