New Character - Boomerang (Frederick Myers) 4*

Meet Boomerang, the latest Aussie preparing to make his mark on MPQ this year!

A former professional pitcher turned supervillain, Fred Myers puts his throwing arm to work with an assortment of high tech boomerangs. He can intercept enemy abilities, set up Strike tiles with his MultiRangs, and send razor sharp Razerangs flying across the battlefield. Pair him with some fellow Sinister Six members to strengthen his defenses and deal even more damage across the enemy team.

Abilities

Ability: Major League Pitcher

Color: Yellow
AP Cost: 0

Boomerang always looks out for the Sinister Six, even if it’s currently the Sinister Five.

(PASSIVE) Whenever an enemy fires an ability that will deal damage, Boomerang deflects it with a boomerang, create 1 strength 174 Protect tile(s), and the target takes 75% of the original damage.

If a member of the Sinister Six is in your party, create 1 additional strength 174 Protect tile.

Ability: Multiranged Assault

Color: Black
AP Cost: 7

That’s not a boomerang … THIS is a boomerang. Create a 3-turn Black MultiRang Countdown tile. On completion, create 2 strength 150 Strike tile(s) around it. If a MultiRang Countdown tile already exists, complete it instead.

Ability: Razerangs

Color: Red
AP Cost: 8

Sharp enough to cut through steel with their razer-edges, look out for a throw from down unda! Deal 1331 damage to the target, and hit an additional random enemy for 507 damage for every additional Sinister Six member in your party.

(PASSIVE) Deal 475 damage to enemies returning from Airborne, if there are more than 12 Red tiles on the board, deal an additional 158 damage.

*All character abilities are subject to change.

Is the second set of tables the damage at 370 or ascended to 550? These numbers seem significantly better than the last five star.

Wow they are beefing up the 4 star tier. This guy has health close to 4 star juggs which is by far the best in 4 star land. His match damage is also much greater than any other 4 besides juggs with his 225% bonus.

On another note, I never heard of this guy. Not unusual since I dont know most of marvel characters but his name is so similar to DCs Captain Boomerang that he seems like a cheap knockoff or the DC one is depending on who came first.

P.S. This guy plus Colossus and Man Thing will make for an incredibly annoying defensive pick 3 in sim.

Yeah, don’t really get it. They spent their health and match damage budget reserved for superhuman Goliath kinda characters on a regular human that throws funny sticks. Something feels off.

Aussies love their boomerangs!!!

And here i thought Famine was the new Standard for Measurement…

Looks solid, but I would have made two changes:

  1. Remove Multirang’s secondary “If a MultiRang Countdown tile already exists, complete it instead” condition and allow for multiple MultiRang countdowns on the board.
  2. Change Razerangs so that the additional damage is also applied per MultiRang tile on the board, but consumes them.

This would allows him to reach his full potential without necessarily needing Sinister Six members, opening up a wide range of team compositions (like Moonstone, who can provide him with infinite black AP), and making his Multirang tiles a threat that you’ll want to destroy before he can get too many out and drown you in strike tiles. It would also be thematic: why is it called a MultiRang if he can only throw one of them? And being able to use Razerang to convert them into direct damage gives him flexibility.

The first column under the black power says Countdown Tiles Made. I assume this should say Countdown Tile Turns. ie. the number of countdowns created doesn’t decrease as the covers increase, there is always only 1 countdown created, but the number of turns before it goes off decreases?

Finally! Let’s see how he stacks up to my design from December 2025!

NEW CHARACTER!

Boomerang (boomerang)
***** Tier

0AP Purple Boomerang

“Hey is that Tinkerer? Yeah, I got your stick weapon but I just need to check what it says on the instructions: When thrown away, comes back, this passive is always unlocked., what does that even mean? What’s that, don’t I know what a boomerang is? I’m from New Jersey, buddy, I don’t know no voodoo! I’m using the name coz of the “rang” bit, like I ring you up on your phone and say “What’s your favourite scary movie?!?!? BOOM, Got ya!” Australia where what? I’ve never even been to Arkansas!” Boomerang throws his boomerang inflicting 23 damage to a random character, Boomerang counts for random targets.

3AP Black Throw it away!

When Boomerang threw his boomerang:

Blue: “Tinkerer? Yeah so I just threw it in the lake by mistake! So how do I get it b…wait, what’s happeni…” THWOCK! Boomerang is stunned for 2 turns.
Red: “Ow!!! It came back and hit me, this thing is a dud! Now I need an ambulance!” Boomerang takes 147 self damage.
Yellow: “I’m in the hospital now, I managed to throw that damned thing away again just before the ambulance left after they took it outta my face! Things are peaceful here!” Boost heal Boomerang for 359 health points and gain 2 AP for every colour that is not Purple.
Green: “I feel better now, Tinkerer, I almost forgive you for…wait what did you say? The second throw activates the explosive timer? Ah, well not my problem now. Say…what’s that heading towards the window…is it, some sort of bird? Let me just check.” BOOM! Boomerang and all allies take 657 damage.
Black: “NURSE!!! The stick came back for me!!! Kill it!!!” Boomerang goes “away” for two turns.
Purple: When Boomerang wakes up he finds his boomerang waiting for him, he panics and throws his boomerang away then hides under the covers, going invisible for 3 turns.

0AP Blue Always comes back.

“I guess I’ve learned to live with my boomerang. I got banned from the park as I threw it and it accidentally went into a tree and brought me back a squirrel but it does have it’s uses. I send it to get my groceries and it only ever maims somebody 1 in 7 times, decent odds! I had to get out of the crime game as when I throw my boomerang it started bringing the police back with it which wasn’t ideal. So I guess we are inseparable, whether I like it or not, it’s just the price of…love.” Whenever Boomerang throws his boomerang, place a 3 turn countdown that returns Boomerang’s boomerang and returns +3 Black AP, this countdown cannot be destroyed, removed or overwritten, it always comes back. Sometimes with a squirrel.

Pictured: Boomerang in action. Not pictured: boomerang. It WILL come back.

Captain Boomerang first appearance 1960

Boomerang first appearance 1966

So pretty clear DC were first here but that doesn’t mean it was a rip-off, more likely they just didn’t know the other one existed and never bothered doing due diligence.

But there are plenty of examples of the two companies having “similar” ideas for example the creators of the Doom Patrol swore that Stan Lee had ripped them off with the X-Men.The rumour was that Marvel had a spy in the DC ranks but it was never proven. Both companies have Enchantress with Marvel debuting in 1964 Vs DC in 1966.

Swamp Thing and Man Thing is even stranger because they debuted months apart and the two creators Len Wein and Gerry Conway at that time shared an apartment where they would both write in the evenings so untangling who might have had influence on the other is impossible.

I think this should be at the very top of Taskmaster’s list of new abilities to learn!

Yellow says “the target takes 75% of the original damage”. Is Boomerang considered the target? I’m guessing yes but it is an odd wording.

Actually it makes perfect sense when you look at the recent rebalanced characters and now Boomerang.

At 270 (max 4) his health is 20526 with 219 damage on the yellow

At 255 (ascended 5 which is impossible for him since he would start at 450) his health is 19314 with 250 damage on yellow.

See what they are doing? They are removing the massive jump in match and health between the 4 and 5 star tiers. The numbers are essentially just linearly scaling up (370 to 450 is roughly in line scale wise instead of the normal huge change in match / health between the 4 and 5 star tiers.

The same thing happened on the rebalanced characters. 3 star damage at 266 is now in line with 4 star damage at 270 when 3 star damage use to top out way below 4 due to tier difference.

They are rescaling all the tiers (1-5) to flow together without any big jumps (esp at the 5 star tier) between the tiers like their used to be.

I think you are misunderstanding the power. Boomerangs passive protects his WHOLE team from enemy powers. The target being referred to in this case is whomever the power was directed against (Boomerang or a team mate). That’s why the target takes less damage at 5 covers.

A note to the Devs on this. In the recent ‘Rebalancing the Meta’ post you complained about the design space being restricted for new designs as part of the reason for nerfing characters like May. Now you release this guy with an ‘always on’ passive that reduces power damage by 60%. That means any other character who reduces power damage that is <60% is dead on arrival because you could just bring Boomerang and get an always on 60% reduction. This is the kind of passive that should have required his CD to be on the board to get the damage reduction part or maybe only get like 20% max reduction without the CD and 60% with it (it should get the protect tile all the time) at 5 covers.
