New Character - Death (First Horsemen) 5*

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are nearly assembled for this year’s anniversary with Death (First Horsemen) 5-Star preparing to make his arrival in MARVEL Puzzle Quest. With War, Famine, and Pestilence already in-game, Death will complete Apocalypse’s Horsemen… and their reunion may be setting something much bigger into motion.

Here’s what you can expect from the final Horseman, bringing the sense that once Death has arrived, the end is never far behind.

Abilities

Ability: Scarab’s Gaze

Color: Blue
AP Cost: 7

Look upon the last face all life sees. Select and create 1 Blue strength 412 Strike tile(s).

Double the strength of Blue, Red or Black tiles converted. Stun the target for 1 turn for each converted Yellow, Green or Purple tile. Deal 1427 Damage.

Ability: Bone of Amduat

Color: Red
AP Cost: 8

Death is a gift unmade. Bones wait a lifetime to exist. Select and destroy 1 tile(s) (destroyed tiles do not gain AP). Deal 2605 damage, plus an additional 601 for every SAP tile destroyed.

(PASSIVE) Death draws from the life force around him, reducing incoming damage to himself by 5% for every friendly SAP tile, up to a max of 3 tiles.

Ability: Eye of Death

Color: Black
AP Cost: 10

Tired of this dance, look upon the last face all life sees. If none exist, create a friendly 14-turn Black Scarab’s Eye of Death Repeater tile. Otherwise, reduce the tile’s timer by 1 turn(s). On tile creation, target the enemy in front. On tile completion, down that targeted enemy. If the tile is destroyed in any way, recreate it with +1 additional turn(s).

(PASSIVE) Every time a friendly Blue, Red or Black ability is used, reduce the friendly Scarab’s Eye of Death tile’s timer by 1.

*All character abilities are subject to change.

This looks more promising than the other 3. That black could be interesting. Especially paired with spider horse and someone tanking red. The other two seem ok as well. I’m not sure that he’s anything special, at least at first glance, but he doesn’t look horrible at least.

A few questions and thoughts but, as mentioned above, doesn’t look “out of the box” bad. But is that enough for a 5? It honestly reads more like a 4 than a 5 but maybe that is the new state of things.

Blue: If reading correctly, at level 5, I could choose 3 y/g/p tiles one at a time and stun all three of the other team? Or can I choose one character for two turns and one for one turn? Or one for all three turns? That’s very inexpensive for a quite powerful tool.

Red: Doesn’t seem super interesting but could be wrong. Feel like SC does this better and can do up to 5 tiles.

Black: Seems like if the targeted enemy is downed before the scarab expires, the scarab does nothing? So it doesn’t transfer at all. 10 black is a lot for a 14 turn CD that isn’t fortified. It’s hard to get three turn CDs to stay around.

At least destroying it recreates it, but yeah 10 black is too expensive to then have to start chugging down the CD. Doesn’t 5may do something similar with a big CD tile that downs?

Why make it a repeater also, once it downs the enemy won’t it still be targeting them unless you’ve destroyed it?

A repeater instead of a CD does seem odd, perhaps that’s a mistake? :man_shrugging: I’m pretty sure one of the Captain Marvels can cause a CD to immediately expire and I feel like there is someone who does something similar with repeater tiles. But with more covers it drops from 14 to 10 and someone like Spider Horse who can spam red blue or black powers could also make it more viable.

Just in case you dislike those dang excel files as much as i do:

550 Abilities Rank 5

Definitely better than Scorpion, but nothing new or exciting. That’s top tier health though. Only Juggs, Blob and 6 stars have higher.

As bad as that black is, there might be something there for Galactus… maybe.

Oh wow, I didn’t even notice his health! And thanks, that is definitely much nicer and easier to read.

It’s really hard to notice anything the way they do the info here.

Like the black actually costing 10 instead of 14 and if cast twice it’s down to 5 turns. Still a bad ability, but better than 14, if you could ever justify 5 points in it.

I will also note he is a blue mutant, which means blue krakoa, and Agatha5s best friends. Maaaaybe Moonstone4 friend? Eh.

I think the black power is pretty bad and probably unusable under most circumstances, but his blue is very strong (it is a blue power that converts tiles to blue, which should go infinite with itself).

You might need a little help, but his strongest color is blue, and we just got a guy who increases the rate that your strongest color appears.

I suppose you could use blue over and over to trigger black and kill a guy, but that seems unnecessarily complicated. I’d just bring Firebird/Toad and plan to kill them with cascades and Toad passive damage. Blue is the worst color for this kind of power, though, since there’s no blue AP support, so the whole thing might be too slow.

Oh, you could run him with Toni Ho and use her yellow to set off the repeater and oneshot guys. It’s too bad it costs 10 though. 16 AP in two different colors to kill one guy is kind of a lot in this metagame.

Yeah, one cast with Beast4 and the infinite is going. Beast with Toad would be pretty fast. It’s boring and nothing new though. Like a less good Capt2

Actually you can 80% turn 1 infinite without Beast.

  • Zemo with Tinkerer
  • Death with Krak
  • +1 in black apboost

Zemo black makes Deaths blue coast 4. Each cast of his blue is guaranteed at least 4. There we go.

They sure do love adding infinites to this game. Completely invalidating his black ability, minus Galactus.

Eh. There’s a use for him, even if it’s a boring one!

Toni’s repeater is a repeater though so it might down everyone in 6 turns. I was hoping 4* Cap Marvel could be used but that’s possibly why Death’s is a repeater rather than a CD.

I do thematically like the black, with Death stalking the entire enemy team in turn though. Definite “Final Destination” vibes.

Look upon the last face all life sees is used twice, which seems like lazy writing.

Perhaps change it to something like " you can not fight the inevitable no matter how strong you are" or " the reaper can not be vanquished"

I shall think on humorous alternatives and welcome anyone to come up with lighter descriptions.

I guess the fact that the black tile is a repeater means that after it has downed one opponent, you could match the repeater and a new repeater would be created targeting whichever opponent was now in front, so in theory one repeater could down all three opponents. Very messy though.

I’m just guessing the flavour text is an early version. “Scarab” shows in both blue and black power descriptions but not names and so it is possible they juggled those around.

I would hope in practice it reassigns the target automatically after the repeater has fired. Guess we’ll have to see what happens in game.

A guaranteed turn 1 kill with an established combo, so yes. Just gonna take a while
