New Character - Scorpion (Brand New Day) 5*

Inspired by the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, Scorpion crawls into the neighborhood as MPQ’s next 5-Star character!

Alongside his new abilities, which take the sting out of enemy SAP tiles and tear through opponents, Scorpion will also be part of two upcoming Spider-Verse adjacent affiliations based on their penchant for heroics or lack thereof: Spider-Foes and Spider-Friends.

Does this mean 4 weeks of Spider-Foes and 4 weeks of Spider-Friends heroics?

Pros: Feeders are still back, yay!

Cons: This feels like a 3 or 4 star move set. His powers are cheap-ish but not nearly strong enough. His SAP destruction is fine but still not as good as Morbius. There’s absolutely zero reason that the black countdowns should deduct AP. It’s not stupidly strong to warrant that at a 9 cost. If that’s because it’s permanent AOE damage, I’d rather have it not be permanent and not lose AP.

All-in-all, looks like another meh character. Not sure what the new design philosophy specifically is but it feels like every release this year has been wildly underwhelming to where people don’t get excited for new releases anymore.

I like his purple.

End of evaluation.

The passive on purple might be interesting if it triggers on passives, and if the dmg scales up well.

The rest seems kinda meh to me.

Hard to argue with the meh.

His purple could be good against purple man as we are sure to see alot more of him going forward.

I didn’t think about passives. Even then, it doesn’t seem worth it. Might be more useful if it was permanent damage or if it increased each time one was used.

Scorpion would have been a good character to implement a mechanic similar to Hit-Monkey or Punisher. Get stung for x damage, create a poison tile to do x damage to target per turn. If sting or poison damage causes a spider-verse character to fall below x% health, downed immediately. Maybe down without revive?

Do not understand this guy’s damage numbers at all - was the remit just “Omega Red but worse”?

At 450 this is one of the sorriest power sets you’re ever likely to see.

Indeed! Tactically, it would be good to at least try to pace them so underwhelming 6 stars aren’t followed by awful 5 stars.

I legitimately think he was supposed to be a 3 star and they moved him, but forgot to change his damage numbers. At 550 his active (and passive) abilities do less than a standard match 3?

Pre nerf IronMays boost isn’t enough to carry those numbers.

Black has minor board control, and Purple has passive retal damage. Not a fan of random damage in Green, ala 4Moonknight. Read like AI proof design where the randomness of Black and Green benefits more. Not a fan of Purple either. Felt like guaranteed damage to players just to force use of health packs, ala Swamp Thing.

I agree with the overall rating of “meh.” Again, I’m not expecting everyone to be crazy OP new meta, but I’d really like 1 power to be “Ooooh that could be fun” and another to be “That’s pretty good.” at the very least.

Black - Expensive, and weak. He’s not a tank and has no jump in front stuff, why should he want to be in front? Attack tiles in general are very weak. I want to ascend my 4doom and try to make it work, but mine’s very far. As it is, it’s a weak fist and has no synergy with his kit. Permanent damage, other than omega red and…maybe crystal (boosted) is all crap. Way too low numbers, stop putting this on characters! And then, it only even does damage if YOU match the tiles, if it counts down, it hurts you! This whole power is a mess.

Suggestions: It destroys tiles, creates attack, deals damage. Choose one and make it better. Also cheaper.
– Attack tiles: Have it make ~3 decent sized attack tiles. Have the passive add 1 to all acid countdowns when an attack tile leaves the board

-- Destroy tiles: Destroy more, and cheaper cost. Maybe destroy ~5 tiles and have the passive trigger when the CD leaves the board (not just match/destroyed)

-- Damage: Better. More damage or multihits, or more hits the more of his CD tiles are out. Passive would need a bigger max # than 2

-- Passive: Ditch the permanent damage, it’s a really tough mechanic to get right and 99.9% of characters with it have failed miserably. Ditch the AP loss and have it just do AP damage when matched/destroyed by anyone.

Purple: Very situational. It should destroy random tiles, and more of them, and PRIORITIZE enemy special tiles, not just SAP. Passive is a very weak and much worse strange? I’d say do decent damage (not sure what the numbers look like champed) AND maybe throw out an acid CD tile when they use one. It wouldn’t be as crazy as strange but would synergize better and be more interesting.

Green: Seems like just a much worse version of 4Scorpion’s power. I’d say scrap it and do something different. But if you insist…I’d have it give green+purple AP, give him a bit of an AP engine. Maybe 2 green/2purple? The random target really hurts though. Ditch that please. It’s a horrible gamble if they have one near-KO’d character, and if they have multiple, then you’ve pretty much won already. Again, none of these numbers really show what the damage is at 450 champed, so it’s hard to say if it’s a big/good nuke.

Overall: 1.5/10. Slightly better than gwenom, but his passive actively works against you and is crap when it is actually working. So you can’t use him in a team that actually cares about black. At least gwenom just neuters herself. Scorp will at least still be able to make matches, so when boosted he’ll…do that. Might as well have just released him with no abilities and 30% more match damage and health or something. Big vanilla guy in a suit.

Still no Longshot. Le sigh

I won’t criticize a release that ties into one of the only two Marvel movies this year. Scorpion is 7/22, BND is 7/31.

I mean come on, he’s in the movie! Did we expect them not to tie into a Spidey movie somehow? There may even be another movie character next. (4* Tombstone maybe.)

I mean I won’t defend the powers but it’s fine to release Scorpion. Maybe Longshot comes in August but I’m leaning towards October for Anniversary.

Purple seems to at least gain you AP and do damage for the enemy special tiles destroyed. Kind of a bummer if there are none though, as you probably won’t even be able to fire it…

On the whole I think 4 star scorpion is much, much better than this guy (even before he’s ascended).

Purple passive sounded good at first glance, and immediately I thought about pairing him with Toad to double dip when the enemy firsts a power. Then I looked closer at their damage numbers & realized Toad at 370 does about 4x as much damage as Scorpion does at 550.

Maybe other factors will find a niche for this guy, it’ll be interesting to see what might make him usable outside of his boost period.

Have just realised that MThor will preferentially target and destroy his black countdown tiles with her passive, so there is that. Passive permanent AoE every turn (if enough charged tiles on the field).

Hardly seems the best partner for her though. And Omega red on his own does the AoE damage thing better… so I feel like I’m missing the USP of this character.

Scorpion still does damage with MThor, but Omega Red gets neutered by her, so there’s that. MThor, Okoye, Scorpion? Put Fantasticar on whoever tanks the most colors? Scorpion & MThor would handle clearing lots of special tiles every turn at least.

I don’t know if this is an unreleased variant or a fan made one, but here’s a supposed tie-in to the movie. It’s based on this comic.

Spiderman Adventures, Vol #1, Issue 2. November 1994. Cover Artist: Alex Saviuk

But we’ll probably get a cover made by the developers.

I’m so sorry to have to be the one to tell you, but its turn 3 and your Scorpion is dead. He did 1.6k team dmg on his way out and got rid of 3 SAPs (if you were lucky and if they even had SAPs. (SPOILERS, they did have SAPs, because it was Sammernaught that killed him)).

True hypotheticals aside… here’s another true hypothetical: His damage numbers are so low, he would seriously be better if he hit his own team instead of enemies, that way we could strategically trigger on damage passives like Agatha3 etc. with no loss.
