Also, I had an idea - how about each node/pin in pvp is a different “difficulty”/MMR?
Like, the easy node is what we had during the buggy times (lots of seeds then low-point teams), the moderate node is basically standard MMR, and the hard node is only teams with 70+points regardless of composition.
Want your wins? go easy, have fun, forget about placement.
Want a challenge to zoom up the leaderboard? go hard.
(Haven’t worked through the repercussions of this thing, feel free to tear it apart. Also seems like a huge code change, but hey, we suffered through the unity transition for a reason, no?)
I voted for a happy middle, and I think that would be true in an ideal world where I had more time to think and play. I did a count last time and made 2 actual gem matches en route to 25 wins. Was it fun? Not particularly. Do I find spending the same amount of time to get to 3 wins a more productive use of my time? Definitely not. But I never liked PvP much anyway.
I think the swing for me is that the game needs to cater to all players and so I do like @y4747’s suggestion above. I do think though that there needs to be a disadvantage to it too so I expect to get battered from 400pts and choose to retaliate or not. Perhaps a “skip seed teams” button might be easier to implement for those who wish to use it? Or even better, thinking of an @entrailbucket style view - search for player or score band (I.e. 50+ points opponents). And properly update rewards for the Top 1.
That would help with a real scramble to the top and bring PvP back to where it should be and cater for all.
Any team can be worth 70 points, especially if they start at the beginning of the PvP so the 70+ point node will not just be filled with 550 players if that is the plan.
I do wonder if players have forgotten what the point of seed teams are - they are meant to inject points into the event at the beginning so that players can actually earn points to be worth a win value themselves for MMR, not be a crutch throughout for easy wins.
I’m not opposed to them looking at MMR and seeing whether it can be tweaked but having three different nodes to hit is just PvE and we already have plenty of that to do.
I’d like a guaranteed element of the first 10-12 fights against seed teams then MMR the rest
If you were lucky enough to get a good start before then you could always get 11 fights done before the 450-550 teams were all you got
My personal target is to get 25 wins as quick as I can but when it was all seeds it made it hard to achieve other quests as the fight was over in 2 matches
They can’t give you a node that always has 70+ point teams, because that requires that such teams actually exist at your current point level. When I’m playing (in the last few hours of the event, in the least populated slice) I very rarely see any 70+ point matches, because there aren’t any.
I suppose they could just give you non-player teams, but we already have that and it’s called PvE.
Really I shouldn’t put players down for wanting PvP to be PvE, because MPQ PvP makes zero sense. It is SUCH a weird game – I wish I could talk to the original designer and figure out what they were thinking. Like, why ELO, in a game where the attacker wins every single fight? How was that ever going to work?
Eventually players figured out a way to have fun with it, and it’s really fun, but it requires a ton of knowledge about bizarre mechanics, and a bunch of tactics that are totally non-obvious. Before wins-based, if you wanted to get all the rewards, you’d either have to somehow figure it out on your own or get told how it all worked. If you were motivated you’d find someone and they’d show you what to do.
But rather than creating tutorials and explainers or (god forbid!) simplifying the mechanics, the devs just created wins-based as an offramp. “Don’t like this weird pile of nonsense? Just ignore it all and do this instead!” It’s a copout, and now there’s all these players who’ve never known anything but wins-based, and don’t understand why any of the original mechanics are even there.
I’m down with clubbing all those seed/seal/cub teams all day. Placement is just cherry on top. And I dun mind being clobbered to oblivion. So the ‘normal’ MMR is just… Urgh…
