Spending CP on that last cover

Interested to get thoughts of the vets on this one.

Is it completely crazy to spend CP on the final cover of a 3 star champ?

To put this into context, my Blade has 12 covers, five in green and thanks to the Gauntlet I have another green sitting there.

I have only a single champed 3 star right now (Super Steve), so the thought of champing a second useful character is really tempting. Yes, I know CP is precious, but champing Blade would give me an LT, so I don’t think I’d really lose anything. And the thought of that cover just dying in the ether bugs me.

My alliance have almost unanimously said to wait it out, I’ll get that last cover I need through DDQ eventually. Right now, I think I’ll do as they suggest, but I’d by lying if I said I wasn’t wavering a little. So what would you do?

Blade isn’t worth it. IM40, Strange, Thanos are. Other 3’s probably aren’t, other than maybe Cyke, Mags, Cage, KK. The other consideration is having a solid rainbow team. With Steve your next two for an optimal team are KK and IM40. That will help you climb in Shield Simulator too.

Blade’s not bad, but you’d lose benefit of his auto generating strike tiles by using a character who need red.

In general my rule is to only by the last cover with CP if I’m going to have another cover (or multiple) die on the vine if I don’t. I make exceptions for some of the best characters like Strange.

Assuming you have the iso, wait until the cover is about to expire before spending the cp and then buy it if you still need to do so, no point wasting the cover as you will eventually want to champ everyone anyway.

I say do it. You get a LT for the first champ cover anyway, so you’ll still get a 4*. CmdPts come fairly quickly these days anyways.

I would say if its the last cover in order to champ then it’s absolutely a good deal.

You spend 20cp in order to obtain a more useful LT and also champ a 3* at the same time. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I was able to cover Thanos naturally…with three Strange covers in queue, his was the only 3* cover I’ve purchased with CP (or HP for that matter). I agree with others - you get the LT anyway, and then you aren’t wasting the XP and other rewards for tossing out the extra covers.

I’d be much more likely to buy a 4* cover with CP (never have, never will) if they weren’t so unreasonably priced. I bought a few back in the day with HP, and it took a whole month of HP to do it…but there wasn’t anything better than 4* I was going to get with that HP at the time.

I finally bought a cover for 120 cp. Given the amount of cp you can earn, it doesn’t take that long to save up that much. And I think I reached a point where one specific cover is worth “more” than 6 classic pulls. I probably would have gotten some champ levels from those tokens, but a new champ is more enticing. Getting usable covers just increases my iso demand, I would rather save it for someone I want.

Haven’t bought a 3* yet, but 20 cp seems worth it, for the last cover at least.

I bought the final red cover for Steve Rogers.. two-years ago. Since then I have not had to purchase a cover for a 3* except for Strange because I had 4 covers expiring and I was at a 2/5/5. The point is, the covers will come for 3*, especially with DDQ. Unless it’s a character that will ultimately make battles easier for you then be patient young one icon_e_wink.gif

the only 3* I ever bought a cover for was Iron Fist. He is the best 3* in the game, someone I still use frequently. However, I also had 2 of him dying on the vine and really wanted to use him and champ him.

Blade was actually my very first 3* that I champed, so I have a soft spot in my heart for him. However, I would not buy his final cover. CP comes easily, but 4* progression can be brutal and I believe everyone needs all the help we can get. Since they have slowed their 3* releases, they are easier to come by than 4’s. Unless you have like 5 dying on the vine, I’d say wait it out. You will get more covers of him on the vine without killing yourself too much.

I’m eventually going to champ all the characters, so if I’m at 12 covers and have one about to expire it is worth the CP to me. I’ve done it several times now (even on some characters that most would say weren’t worth spending CP on) but, in the end, I’m glad that I did.

I’ll go even further than this: What is the opportunity cost of having now what you might have later, or in the case of 3s, what you will have within 120 days when DDQ rolls around to that cover being in the (so much faster now) Enchilada pinata? Will you be able to move your MMR over by a category sooner, so you get different opponents in PvP and can progress higher because you have a dual 3 champ team instead of a partial coverage pre-166 3* team?

It’s similar analysis to my burning 2160 CP in to the last covers on my Bolt and OML, on a lower scale.

Big vote for buying the last cover to champ Blade. It could be literally months before you get another usable cover to champ him otherwise. The near term gain of spending the CP may pay for itself over this amount of time (reaching more rewards/higher placement).

His powers are quite good, even with the conflict of needing a board heavy in red to add his passive strikes.
Matched with 3Cap, Blade’s Nightstalker can be an amazing ability. If you pay attention to the enemy teams’ strongest color, you’ll be stealing 2 per round easily and crippling their chances of building up a strong power against you. This stealing AP can make up for leaving red on the board (or speeding up Cap’s expensive blue too), or acquiring purple for Blade’s very strong attack tiles.

Are you mostly a PvE or PvP player? Blade can become an amazing character vs goon nodes and makes clearing PVE so much better/efficient.

If you champ Blade, be sure to set him at 3/5/5. You need to be placing 2 strikes each turn when possible, and his black is overkill at stealing more than 2 AP per round.

The only challenge with these two is deciding on a good active yellow-green ability character to bring along (depending on your roster). Thor, Storm, Beast, Squirrel Girl (yes, I said it), Sentry, Ares; and kinda Patch Wolverine, Kamala Kahn, Rocket & Groot.
It’s nice when Patch tanks red for Cap (but that is probably not the case at your current levels), since Cap can place his CD’s onto Patch’s enemy strikes.

I think “you should never ___” arguments are a bit silly. It all depends on your personal goals, play style, personality etc. I agree that most vets would probably advise against spending CP on covers, but whether or not that works for you is up to you.

I personally spent most of my CP on covers when I was at the 2-3 stage and don’t regret it. It allowed me to get six championed 3*s within about two months of playing (though yes, I also spent money and did other things you’re not “supposed” to do like spending ISO for standard tokens).

Sure, if I’d spent my CP on legendaries or hoarded them, it would make the 4* transition easier, but it also would have taken a lot longer to get there. If you have the patience, it’s probably better to wait, but I don’t. And it’s true that you’ll eventually get the 3* covers if you wait long enough, it’s also true that you’ll get pretty much anything if you wait long enough. You will get every 4* champed without spending any CP if you wait long enough, but it will be a VERY long wait.

If getting to the 3* stage faster doesn’t matter to you, then you’re probably better off not spending CP on 3* covers, but the reason did was that I just didn’t find the 2-3* stage of the game very enjoyable. My options were too limited, and I found the 2s kind of boring to play. Once I got some 3s, that changed. Having them also allowed me to earn more 3* covers (by finishing in the top 50 in PvP etc.). It probably would have taken me at least another month or two (or three) to reach that stage if I’d spent CP on 4/5*s.

Plus, at the time, I didn’t have the roster space to have a lot of 4s so I ended up either having to sell them off or having my roster cluttered with unuseable 4s. I also wasn’t ready for 5s and sold off the few I got to avoid scaling (another thing you’re never supposed to do). Yes, one obvious solution is to hoard your CP until you’re ready for 5s (or at least 4*s) but I don’t have the personality to hoard CP for months (kudos to those who do - it would drive me insane).

Currently (day 99) I have all the 3s rostered [18 champed] and about half the 4s (none useable) and find the game MUCH more enjoyable, as I am able to use several different teams (instead of the same old 2* teams) with characters that have a much wider variety of skills (I suspect that the increase in enjoyment level at the 4* stage won’t be as great, but maybe I’m wrong) and be more competitive in more events AND spend less time grinding (with Thanos champed, doing seed teams in LRs takes about five minutes).

Wait until the last day of the current vault. You might get the cover from a taco. If not, and you like Blade, then go ahead and buy it. I use him a lot.

My Blade is now at 2/5/5 (thanks to today’s DDQ), with that green from Gauntlet sitting in the queue. I’m hoping that I’ll pull that final black from the taco vault, but if I don’t, you bet I’ll be buying it for CP.

The way I look at it is that I’ll get a cover and a LLT for 20CP. Not to mention the XP boost.

OP, dooooooo iiiiiiiiit. But wait until the last minute, just in case.
