State of Unity AMA with MPQ Game Producer, IceIX

Join us on Wednesday July 16th at 10am PST in our official MPQ Discord Server for a State of Unity AMA. Our very own MPQ Game Producer, @IceIX will be around for a few hours during our regular work day to answer some of our community’s question regarding the state of MPQ’s Unity launch and what plans we have to get things back on track after our recent rough start to the new game engine.

If you’re unable to make it for the live chat, we’ll do our best to take some notes and post them as a post-AMA F.A.Q. on our forums. Additionally, please feel free to ask questions in this forum post and we’ll try to also address them during the AMA. See you then!

For those of us with jobs that require us to be there which means we can’t attend, is there any way you can just capture the entire text of the chat and simply post it here. That way we can all read through it at our leisure.

I’ve created a dedicated dev-qa channel so theoretically yes. Not sure how well the formatting would be, but we’ll see what we can do.

Q1. Are the scroll speed limitations an artificial slowness factor which is controlled and managed in the engine or an artifact of either the engine itself or how the elements are being loaded slowing the appearance?

Prior to unity I could scroll down 500 covers in a few seconds and the scroll rate was incredibly fast. In unity it takes significantly longer and there is clearly a maximum speed.

Q2. Of every visual item which has changed, the battle preview screen where the characters fly in and bounce is the one which gives me the most visual “ick”. Can you provide a method to turn that off and just have the battle preview simply appear without extraneous movement?

What’s your communication plan going forward? How often can we expect update posts about the game/engine, and do you plan to provide us with a priority task list?

Are the slow scroll speeds intentional or a bug? If a bug, when do you hope to fix this?

What are your plans to force (entice? encourage?) those players who have not updated to Unity to make the switch?

As someone who can’t be around due to timing issues / not having Discord, I would ask my fellow forum members to sum up the things said and posz a short essay of it here, thank you gratefully

That clearly did not happen with this rollout. Are you still aiming for Feature Parity before adding new features?

If so, what’s the current timeline? When do you hope to reach the same feature state of the old engine?

If not, when can we expect to see new features in the game?

Can you tell us what is a bug and not a bug? For example is the increased cover drop rate in pvp a bug or not? Is class of 2013 pvp a bug? Will random unannounced pvp show up time to time?

I thought we were getting an upgrade to sending teamups so that we don’t have to keep pressing the next arrow to send mbw teamup.

When should we expect a roadmap of new features and events for the rest of the year?

S0Kun shared on Discord that the class of PvP is not random, but the first upcoming class of PvPs rolling into anniversary. Certainly unannounced though. It fell ‘off their radar’…

@S0kun there are now two posts asking to list questions for the AMA.

Will the above questions be considered for the AMA, or do we need to post them again in the other thread (state of unity update #1)?

Good catch. Too many unity posts lately and I updated it to post the questions in this thread.

Perhaps I am not understanding correctly but it seems after this new update there won’t be any other versions of MPQ to play? So it will be Unity or nothing? I guess this can be clarified.

Why would this update do something that the other updates so far have not done? There are many players still on the old engine. This new release tomorrow won’t change that, unless they changed something from the previous updates that all didn’t force anyone to switch.

From S0kun in the other thread about update:

Most importantly, this release puts all platforms back to one release version instead of two.

So by that I take it that currently they are running two versions of the game which seem to have players in different states of play but after this one there will only be one version available, Unity if you like, for all. Of course I could be completely misunderstanding that.

How do you prefer to get bug or feature requests?
There are so many places I can’t keep track. (lots of duplicates)
Forum posts, Discord, Reddit, Steam, Google/Apple App Store Reviews, etc. ??

Conversely, What is your preferred way to indicate a particular item’s state i.e. New, In Progress, Done or proposed release dates to the public.
Perhaps a specific public website like: Bugzilla, Jira, Github, etc. might be useful to consolidate to a single method.

TLDR; How can we help you out? What can we do to simplify your life, making you be more efficient?

Exactly stated 5* problems. Thank you, @gamecat235 . I didn’t know how to articulate those problems. There are many others, but those are really terrible ones and good places to start.

Adding the lag in buttons showing. Awful. Because I can often click the “button should be here” space and the game responds.

I am not sure because unfortunately, while they did communicate, they did not use the same verbiage I would have to make it crystal clear to a player base of thousands what they are doing here.

But I suspect this particular “back to one release version” is because Amazon is on 325 while Steam, iOS, and Android are on 324; 326 will be the official version for all of them after this. I think.

I have no idea what will happen to the old engine or how long it will be playable.
