The Cascade Problem

Giant cascades, and match-5s falling in from nowhere, often have huge effects on battles in this game. Personally, I’d prefer if gems falling in were constrained to never make matches. It would make seeing combos on the board more important, and prevent those utterly ridiculous turns (besides green ramp, or bunches of 5-matches, but I think both of those work as they should). It should be possible, as both the starting gem board and the no matches reshuffle are constrained in the same way. What do you guys think?

The randomness and big swings are exactly what make match 3 games exciting. They’re endemic to the genre.

I empathize in that I often find the falling matches irritating (moreso because it seems the AI gets them a lot more than I do…though I realize this is probably just my bad luck), but never having falling gems match would completely nerf red gem-destruction, as well as make many games take twice as many turns as before. So my vote is for keeping it.

It’s not just your bad luck…

Greg needs a lobotomy.

The battle log is a great way to measure this. It’s a bit of a pain to count up a few matches but it should be balanced. If one finds that the AI is doing significantly better, then perhaps learn from that. A human player is still smarter than Greg.

Maybe. I’ve seen Greg still do stupid stuff, but I’d like to know how well his gem matches are. Not taking sides on this issue, but I will say I’ve played a lot of online chess vs. an unrestrained AI and it was a very humbling experience.
