A comment on another thread reminded me of how much I loved playing Stratus Walk and Undergrowth Champion – in fact Stratus Walk remains one of my favorite combo cards of all time. I like it with Plummet in legacy and Sandwurm Convergence in Standard.
What are some of your favorite combos – both of all time and in Standard where at least one card is a common or uncommon?
Turn to Frog + Unsummon — 2 kills on one card
Wily Goblin + Beckett – turns Becky into a stealing / killing machine for 3 mana
This conversation about Stratus Walk and Undergrowth Champion…it sounds strangely familiar
I enjoy Ruin Rat with Cartouche of Solidarity, the poor man’s mechanic for an unbreakable wall of rats.
Back in my weenier days, I enjoyed Dust Stalker combo’d with Kozilek’s Return and Temple of the False God. 2 damage to all opponents creatures every turn. Woooo the power.
Of course I got lucky and packed Deploy mid-way through Innistrad, so I’ve been pretty lazy for a long time
Graven Abomination and kill spells together make for an amazing anti-graveyard combo. Embalm/eternalize are rendered useless. I haven’t faced them, but even those god cards would be prevented from returning to your opponent’s hand.
Forerunner of the Legion + Mavren Fein is still probably my favorite basic combo. Not quite as consistent as using Legion Conquistador to trigger Mavren, but I like that he gives you a vampire token when he enters, and more with Mavren when he attacks. You just gotta make sure you’re tutoring up another copy of himself every time he enters.
Back when i started, i remember True faith censor + murder investigation was probably one of the best defensive combos i had available.
Very cheap, reliable and perfect to absorb oponents destruction spells.
Used to play them with cheap first strike creatures like lone rider, consul lieutenant and paranoic parish blade that were perfectly designed to get the best out of the censor.
It also reminds me the amazing graf harvest + prized amalgam combo … And how eficient it was against tezz2 bossfight and his bloody construction …
@Coilbox I found this interesting and gave it a go but I cannot seem to make it work for the life of me. Is there something more to this combo? As it doesn’t seem to do much by itself, what steps are you using to ensure it activates effectively? I can see this being very useful in A.I. though since treasures are automated
Don’t have dead man’s chest, unfortunately but I’d imagine you want something to kick it off each turn. Playing it in Tezz 2, using his second ability gives you a servo generator which could start the ball rolling. Of course, throwing those three cards in Vraska and going all in on pirates (maybe add treasure map?) would generate A LOT of treasure each turn, and thus A LOT of killing.
I forgot to include there ‘Prying Blade’ which will make you find a treasure every time the creature attacks… i find it very useful in an Angrath deck because of his skills.. First one makes you find a treasure as well, the second one will make you take control of your opponent creature killing it at the end of the turn, with another treasure if you have the dead mans chest…
And having the third one, also deals damage to the opponent whenever he puts anything on the graveyard… Dunno, maybe is not ‘that’ amazing and powerful but i really like it :3
EDIT: It’s not mandatory, but i also have a couple removers on the deck to find treasures, ‘contract killing’ and ‘Vona’s hunger’… might look like too many things to put together, but they are not really expensive any of them, and doesnt take that long to make it work…
storm the vault would be pretty silly with these treasure generators as well. Thinking back to Tezz 2, getting his loyalty all the way up to his ult, your treasures turn into (nearly) inferno jets. Just something to think about
It’s definitely got a lot of potential. The combination both controls the board and stands to realistically produce anywhere from 1-5 treasure per turn. That many free things has to be useful somehow.
