On numerous occasion, my opponent has taken regular damage with goldnight castigator on the opponents board.

Have you used a spell support or creature effect disabling it- always stops its ability when I’m facing it…
It displays the damage you would have dealt, but from what i have seen, correctly subtracts double that amount.
Perhaps that’s it. I’ll admit, I only looked at the red displayed damage. I’ll look closer next time.
