Well, since I got up a little early today for another go for the Sahelli event - I happened to notice a certain notification of a new planeswalker being available as of right now. Turns out, Jace is getting a facelift! Focusing HEAVILY on the new Investigation mechanic, I don’t think we’ve seen Jace being… so fast… Also, I’ve taken one for the team and already leveled him up to 60 for your information needs! No screenies unfortunately, having issues with finding a suitable location to upload to.
Jace, Unraveler of Secrets
Maximum HP: 104
Color Bonuses: +0
/ +0
/ +0
/ +4
/ +5
Deck Limits:
7 Creatures / 5 Supports / 5 Spells
Abilities @ Level 60:
(9) Investigation: Gain 4 mana for each support on the board - Clues DO COUNT for mana generation!
(12) Study: Discard 1, then Investigate 4 (creates FOUR clues)
(21) Unravel: Create a Support with 6 shields and “When you draw a card, each of your creatures gain +4/+4”
(and we thought Koth’s was vicious!)
Might need to restart your app? Showed up for me at 10:00 EDT.
Also, got some more information regarding his abilities - the Unravel support comes with 6 shields when it is created… which means it’s NOT likely going to be removed UNLESS there’s a Great Aurora in somebody’s hand.
I was just thinking, “Hm, I wish I had Tamiyo’s Journal now. Not sure I can really run up my draw numbers reliably, much less discarding and making room for them, even with Alhammaret’s Archive.”
Then I remembered I had Day’s Undoing. Hmm, maybe Jace 2.0 is worth a purchase…
Demolish would more likely go for the clues instead of the actual supports (clues count as supports!). This is especially true when there’s multiple clues on the board - like when Jace uses his second ability and adds 4 clues to the board!
Lol. Let’s see: Gen 1 PWs all had +5 total mana bonuses. Kiora’s at +6, Ob Nix is at +5. We gradually crept to +8 total mana bonuses, originally for PWs that were pretty lackluster otherwise (Garruk) and then as the standard for new PWs (Nahiri, Sorin). Now we’re up to +9 total.
I feel like they need to either buff the original 5 or greatly reduce the
cost of some of the older purchasable ones. There is a massive barrier for new players to have success between small starting card collections and then also being handicapped by the now significantly weaker starting planeswalker choices. I can see this causing frustration in new players and causing them to quit the game prematurely which can be detrimental to the longterm growth of the game. Besides mana gains, some of the original five are majorly outclassed by new planeswalkers.
Example: Gideon 1’s second ability compared to Nahiri’s first ability. Both give all your creatures +4/+4 but Nahiri’s ability costs 6 less loyalty. It may not seem like much but when you factor in the color overlap between the two and the difference in mana gains, it makes Gideon feel so much weaker than Nahiri to the point that he almost seems obsolete.
Should I buy Jace as my first non-10g planeswalker? I’m a 10year veteran of MTG, and have been playing this game for 2 weeks. I luckily pulled Tamiyo’s Journal and the Thopter-generating support mythic, so I think new Jace is going to be a solid pw for me. However, I have these concerns:
Is 15$ a fair amount to pay for a planeswalker? Please note that I’ve only been playing for 2 weeks, so I don’t know how much they typically go for, especially the broken ones.
Does he have a chance to be nerfed? I recently got onto these forums and the first thing I saw were the nerfs, so my wallet is clutched a bit tightly right now.
Do you think he will be fun to play? I love love love liliana because it makes you plan your hand size, but jace 1.0 is just boring to me because his abilities are “fire-and-forget”, and not that interesting.
Should I focus on buying more cards or more pws? I’ve got ~5 of the big boxes so far, and all my original 5 pws are already level 60.
Thanks for your time in answering these questions!
