I’m still learning a lot about team formation but for now I have two general “team types” and try to view fights through that lens to build a team. The key to me is whether you want players that tend to cause a lot of board turnover or if you want to keep tight control on the board:
-
Chaos teams - these rely on few actual turns, but abilities that can keep a single turn going for a long time. The backbone of this kind of team is Rag. The classic example for me is Rag/C Storm. Once you’ve got a bank of red enough for 3-4 T-Claps, you can fire those off, probably trigger a lot of green matches, then trigger storm’s green, which shekes up the board, hopefully triggers a few cascade matches, and generates AP (critically you want to pick up a few reds). You use the reds to gen more green and just try to keep an endless cycle of abilities going for a while. For teams like this, you want players with abilities that cause a lot of board shakeup, because otherwise your board just gets and stays heavily green and you can starve out other colors. You want to avoid teammates that rely on ability tiles sitting around. So you don’t want Wolvie (who needs a big bank of red attack tiles hanging around to really be effective), countdown timer dudes, etc. Also, stuns aren’t really that important - your goal is just to try to give the other team as few turns as possible. Your biggest risk is running dry on one of the colors you need. People dog C.Storm after her nerf but I don’t know a single better AP battery in the game than her green. Other than that weird Red ISO event, her yellow has always been an afterthought (and probably got me killed as many times as it saved me in PVP)

Control teams - This is almost exactly the opposite. The backbone of this kind of team is probably Spidey, then Wolvie (or maybe Doom if you’ve gotten him leveled). To play these teams, you’re going to eventually get the other team trapped in a stun rotation and you’re just going to be churning through turns. You want to prioritize board control for this type of team, so you’re not going to use things that wipe out big chunks of tiles, like sniper rifle, storm, etc. Wolvie (or Doom) is great here b/c their abilities turn all those little jabs into big hits. Countdown timer abilities work well in these teams because they can tick down while your opponent is stunned and you don’t run much risk of the AI destroying your tiles before they go off. Here, your biggest risk is running dry on the colors you need for stuns.
It helps me to try to form teams by starting from that kind of framework. Hope it helps.
