Miles from Demiurge here to announce an upcoming change. March is Women’s History Month and in celebration, Marvel has commissioned a number of variant covers for its comics this month, drawn by some of the most talented women working in comics today.
We’re excited to announce that we’re joining in the celebration by using these variant cover images in Marvel Puzzle Quest. This change will run for the month of March. (Though let us know which ones you love and we may be able to keep some of them around!)
The characters that are getting special edition covers are:
Captain Marvel (Modern) (cover by Aufa Richardson)
Deadpool (It’s Me, Deadpool) (cover by Sara Richards)
Invisible Woman (Classic) (cover by Colleen Doran)
Rocket & Groot (Most Wanted) (cover by Erica Henderson)
Spider-Man (Classic) (cover by Ming Doyle)
Squirrel Girl (Unbeatable) (cover by Gurihiru)
Star-Lord (Legendary Outlaw) (cover by Sana Takeda)
Thor (Goddess of Thunder) (cover by Stephanie Hans)
These changes should be live shortly. Hope you enjoy the fantastic artwork!
Captain Marvel (Modern) (cover by Aufa Richardson) - indifferent It catches her at a different angle, is better artwork, but references a different character design.
Deadpool (It’s Me, Deadpool) (cover by Sara Richards) - god, no What is this mess??
Invisible Woman (Classic) (cover by Colleen Doran) - yes Hopefully the MPQ guy can redraw our own IW to look a little more like this one!
Rocket & Groot (Most Wanted) (cover by Erica Henderson) - no Nothing against the artwork but it takes too much of the focus off of R&G (much like why i hate the SG cover)
Spider-Man (Classic) (cover by Ming Doyle) - indifferent Same ol Spidey, different environment, good artwork
Squirrel Girl (Unbeatable) (cover by Gurihiru) - god, yes Please anything other than the last cover. Cute artwork too!
Star-Lord (Legendary Outlaw) (cover by Sana Takeda) - god, yes Because this is the Star-Lord artwork we deserve!
Thor (Goddess of Thunder) (cover by Stephanie Hans) - yes Both covers are really good quality but this one just fits so much better for some reason.
I really don’t dig Erica Henderson’s artwork on Squirrel Girl (both ingame art and the original cover). So I’m happy with the replacement art for the SG cover, and the Grocket cover made me realise that my dislike wasn’t just limited to Squirrel Girl. Sorry Erica, I just don’t like your style!
Covers for Invisible Woman, Thor, Captain Marvel, Star-Lord and Spider-Man are all amazing, keep those.
And at the rate at which Deadpool’s cover is changing, you might as well just keep on changing it every 6-8 weeks.
Some really cool and unique covers in there. On more than a couple occasions better than the original cover art they are replacing. It also highlights the “new” marvel (although I’d still like to see some more classic silver - copper age marvel covers) and showing cool art. A welcome change from the trend of just slapping up a new cover that has the largest solo picture of the hero possible even if it’s terrible, terrible art (we all know the ones I mean)
Why not change him up randomly to keep with the ‘personality’ of DP. He does have quite a few fun covers, and antyhing is better than a big picture of his head.
I love the new Invisible Woman cover- the wonky anatomy on the old one always bothered me- and I really like the new Squirrel Girl and Star-Lord covers. Have to say that while I like the new Captain Marvel and 4* Thor covers, I kind of prefer the old ones.
Overall though, I love this idea, the more diversity the better!
It seems rather poor timing that 3 of the 8 new covers (or out of 5 possible three ***'s) apply to characters that are going to be vaulted for the month of March:
Captain Marvel (modern)
Deadpool
Spiderman
Why not unvault them while you’re featuring them?
Henderson has a very cartoony style; what you see in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is generally what she does. See Subatomic Party Girls, which she did before getting the Squirrel Girl gig, or her tumblr for more examples. While I like her comics I agree her work looks very odd wedged into the otherwise uniform MPQ house style. It’s not like Doreen runs around fighting Kraven the Hunter as drawn by John Romita in the Squirrel Girl book.
i love this additions.
Hope you do this more often, well not that often.
As for the covers, i would like the squirrel girl one to stay. The star lord one is also one that have to stay, plus sana takeda’s work is always welcome.
